| | Madonna Celebration CD Madonna Discography of CDs
CELEBRATION, Madonna's fourth major hits collection, has the Herculean task of summing up 30 years of chart-topping pop music by one of the true visionary artists of the era. The 18 songs are tilted toward her good-time dancefloor classics, both from her early days ("Holiday," "Into the Groove") and her later techno-influenced songs ("Hung Up," "Ray of Light"). It also adds a newly recorded track, "Celebration," produced with Paul Oakenfold. The only track that comes close to balladry is the mid-tempo Latin groove, "La Isla Bonita." The collection does a fine job of living up to the title--it's certainly a celebration of Madonna's career and includes some of the most celebratory and thrilling pop music ever created.
Madonna's run at the top of the charts lasted so long, longer than almost any other star, it's almost impossible to squeeze all the hits onto one collection. And so it is that Celebration, a double-disc, 36-track set that also has a companion single-disc condensation, misses a few songs, hits as gorgeous as "Rain" and as goofily camp as "Hanky Panky," but truth be told, they're not greatly missed on this parade of pop genius that's hampered only slightly by its non-chronological order. Out of order, it does emphasize Madonna's consistency, but the bigger problem with the collection is that it mixes up album mixes, single edits, Q-Sound mixes pulled from The Immaculate Collection, and a couple of stray odd edits and mixes. This is a mess, but not quite enough to dilute what is one of the greatest bodies of work in modern pop -- even in this mixed-up confusion, these singles are a joy to hear. [This is the condensed, single-disc version of the two-disc compilation.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

It's a dizzying, non-chronological spin through the Madonna years, years it makes you feel lucky to be living through." Entertainment Weekly (p.56) - "36 tracks covering nearly every phase of her 25-year career. It all holds up surprisingly well." -- Grade: B Madonna Celebration Songs Celebration Review

Celebration album
$10.69 Originally released on Columbia, these two Vikki Carr albums zero in on easy listening versions of popular love songs from the '60s and early '70s. The rather formulaic treatments work best on the well-known compositions of the period, especially "If You Could Read My Mind," "For All We Know," and "So Far Away." Not an essential purchase for casual listeners, but fans who have been waiting for Carr's LPs to make the switch to CD will appreciate it, along with the attached mid-line price. ~ Al Campbell
Twofer combines the 1971 albums, 'Love Story' & 'Superstar' with one bonus track, 'Cabaret' (Single Version). Collectables. 2003.

Celebration album
$11.05 Vikki Carr is a three-time Grammy Award winner, whose international success spans four decades. She has performed for the Queen, five United States Presidents, wartime soldiers in Vietnam and sold-out audiences around the world. She has worked in radio, television, film and theatre. The diversity of her rich voice is impressive. She can belt out the blues or touch the heart with a soft romantic ballad. Frank Sinatra said, "She possesses my kind of voice," Dean Martin called her "the best girl singer in the business," and Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald both named her among their three favourite female singers of all time. This new box set highlights the very best of her singing talents. Vikki has helped compile the set and included are ...
| | P-1 Power CD (2006)
Celebration CD music
$16.45 Modern-day pop comes in all shapes in sizes, and P-1 have no problem touching upon several different pop approaches on their sophomore effort, 2006's Power. With a sound that runs the pop music gamut, lead singer B.A. handles whichever curve balls are thrown her way -- whether it be dance/house (the album-opening "Let's Go"), Latin pop ("Ladrona"), Jamiroquai-esque chillout tunes ("Wisteria"), or a reggae makeover of Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield." Admittedly, there are quite a few other similar-sounding pop artists who mine similar musical terrain, but P-1 are certainly a cut above the cookie-cutter American Idol type foolishness, as evidenced throughout Power. ~ Greg Prato

| | Raphael Saadiq Ray Ray CD (2004)
Celebration music CDs
$14.69 Raphael Saadiq has never been one to walk the safe, highly traveled R&B roads. While his compositions, dating back to his days leading the successful trio Tony Toni Tone, have always been of the smoothly palatable R&B variety, they have certainly been somewhat unorthodox, and there has always been a Prince-like unpredictability to Saadiq's career. In 2004, Saadiq followed a solo debut (which snatched multiple Grammy nominations) and a 2003 live record with a concept-album homage to Blaxploitation films of the 1970s.
AS RAY RAY opens with a perfectly true-to-form audio "trailer," which fades into the groove-funk introduction to the lead character, "Ray Ray Theme." A wandering guitar enhances the ethereally beautiful ballad "I Know Shuggie Otis," and, on "Detroit Girl," Saadiq breaks with his Ray Ray character and throws in music that recalls the decades in between the '70s and early 2000s. Saadiq also cleverly brings together all of his musical projects, as Tony Toni Tone and Lucy Pearl join together on the catchy "Rifle Love." Raphael Saadiq is always willing to take chances, and usually, as on the captivating RAY RAY, his efforts bear sweet fruit.

| | Noisettes Wild Young Hearts CD (2009)
Celebration album
$9.99 With an energetic mix of garage punk bluster, and the quavering jazz- and soul-flavored vocal inflections of front-woman Shingai Shoniwa, the Noisettes became among the most heavily-hyped of U.K. acts with the release of their 2007 debut, WHAT'S THE TIME MR. WOLF? While their sound is not particularly unique in a pop landscape dotted with powerhouse vocalists from Adele to Amy Winehouse to Duffy, the Noisettes, and Shoniwa in particular, bring a modernized vitality sometimes lacking in the retro stylings of their contemporaries. And while the group's 2009 follow-on, WILD YOUNG HEARTS, represents something of a throwback to familiar pop references (the Supremes-like "Never Forget You" and the `60s acoustic-pop of "Atticus"), the balance of the album presents robust synth-based dance rock that is closer in spirit to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs--best reflected in the confident Karen O-styled strut of "Saturday Night" and the atmospheric lament of "24 Hours."
