It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish IF ON A WINTER NIGHT...; no other Christmas album exists in the head like this. It's a holiday album for people who have never wanted to hear a holiday album, let alone own one.

My friend brought this album over this evening, my wife and I were absolutely floored. I will most cetainly purchase the vinyl.
This is way beyond what one would normally catagorize as a Christmas album. Our love, fear and facination of winter and spooky fairytales/nursery rhymes...the very soul of our literature seeps from the darkness and between the lines. Cleary there is only one Sting.

 Sting? What are you doing?
This is Sting's 2nd album for the classical "Deutsche Grammophon" label (I guess "A&M" didn't pick up his contract?), and it REALLY sucks, even worse than the 1st one.
I realize it is supposed to be sort of a "Christmas" album, so that right there is a minus, but Sting, what is going on in that head of yours??
He made the best album of his career in 2003 with "Sacred Love", but since he left A&M, it's just been downhill from there.

"Whenever I Say Your Name" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "Send Your Love" was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
On the day that the second live album of Sting's illustrious solo career (and third if you count the Police's 1995 LIVE set) was to be recorded in Tuscany, Italy, the widely respected singer/songwriter/bassist was beset with one of the world's worst horrors of all-time. The show was to be recorded and broadcast live on the web on September 11, 2001, the day of the World Trade Center tragedy. Instead of canceling it altogether, Sting went on with the recording (although the web broadcast was scrapped except for a single song), resulting in the release of the 15-song ALL THIS TIME, just two short months later. Featured are a trio of Police-era classics inventively re-arranged ("Roxanne," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," and "Every Breath You Take"), plus renditions of such solo selections as the expansive "(If You Love Somebody) Set Them Free," "Brand New Day," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," and the poignant folk-like ballad "Fields of Gold."
