The early 2000s have seen a string of big-budget remakes of classic horror films. In addition to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES, John Carpenter's benchmark slasher flick HALLOWEEN has been given a new-millennial overhaul. At the helm of the project sits rocker Rob Zombie, whose previous films, HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, brought a fan's touch and an auteur's vision to the director's chair. While Zombie's HALLOWEEN is faithful to Carpenter's vision, there are some obvious changes, the most pronounced of these being the substantial focus on Michael Myers's childhood. The film posits Michael (played by a creepily vacant Daeg Faerch) as a troubled child made all the worse by a horrible home life--wonderfully illustrated via William Forsythe's performance as Deborah Myers's boyfriend--and constant abuse at school. Zombie paints Michael's pain with palpable grit and sleaze, but he isn't out to put our culture on the couch--he simply wants to show Michael killing his family. With the exception of Michael's therapy sessions while incarcerated, the film, post-massacre, stays loyal to the original. Zombie's film is clearly the work of a filmmaker who knows and loves the genre. The director's signature is stamped all over HALLOWEEN (most notably in the use of grainy home movie footage and a smokin' classic rock soundtrack), although remnants of Carpenter's brilliant original still remain. When it comes to remakes, it's hard to ask for much more.

Halloween Reviews:

"Zombie's version offers an extended prologue that fills in the formative days of Myers' psychosis..."-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"It's relentlessly malevolent....Zombie's production design laces it with a truly nasty edge."-- Jamie Russell, Total Film

2 stars Very dissapointed
I was really looking forward to watching this film when it got released in cinemas. I was wondering how Rob Zombie was going to be able to direct a remake of the classic 1978 John Carpenter version which shook up audiences and changed the face of the horror genre. When I finally got a chance to watch this film I was extremely disappointed. Rob Zombie's adaptation of Halloween completely ignored the elements of the classic original which garnered on suspense and atmospheric feeling. This version of Halloween is just plain stupid with too many unnecessary scenes, poor acting, too much blood and gore, pathetic dialogue and no suspense whatsoever. I just wonder how John Carpenter must feel watching this new adaptation of Halloween which goes into to much unnecessary detail and contains over the top scenes with no meaning whatsoever. John Carpenter created one of the greatest horror films in history with the conventions of creepy music and suspense. Rob Zombie created one of the worst horror films in history with the conventions of sex, drugs, unnecessary scenes and pointless dialogue. The only thing good about this remake is that we got to find out about Myers childhood and why he became evil. Once Rob Zombie ran out of ideas and things he could do to help improve the movie, he just continued letting Michael Myers keep killing people in order to please the blood-thirsty, new generation of horror fans. Instead of applying his craft and trying to recreate a classic horror film with smart and intelligent elements like John Carpenter and Debra Hill were able to do, he just created a pointless horror film which is a critical failure. Overall this film is an artistic failure full of crude and pointless scenes which only blood thirsty, die hard Rob Zombie fans will enjoy. If you want to watch the real Halloween, I suggest you watch John Carpenters version, the classic 1978 version of Halloween.

5 stars Best remake in a long time!!!
After hearing the news for the remake I was really happy to know that Rob Zombie was directing the movie, instead of some stupid director like Jonathan Liebesman or Glen Morgan thank god!!! The only scene I didn't like was the rape scene he should have kept the origonal scene with Bill Mosley!!

4 stars Great
This version of Halloween had more blood and gore than John Carpenters 1978 classic original. It also had more nudity and language and is definately for a modern horror movie fan. I think this remake of Halloween was very well done, but I don't believe it had the suspence and moments of the original. Once Rob Zombie ran out of subtext is was just more killing and more blood. The acting was very good and the actors really committed to there role. The plot was also great and gave us more background of Michael Myers clidhood and life before he was disturbed and evil. This movie is a great addition to the halloween legacy and is worth watching. However it wasn't able to top the original.

This fourth installment of the series takes place ten years after the original and finds the man in the William Shatner mask in a coma and being transferred from Richmond Mental Institute to Smith's Grove. However, the van gets into a horrible accident, skidding off the road and exploding. Predictably, Myers' body is nowhere to be found in the wreckage, alarming both the skeptical police and the indefatigable Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence). Soon, Myers is spotted back in Haddonfield, and it becomes obvious that his next target is his young niece, Jamie (Danielle Harris). His return has whipped the town into a frenzied mob, which proves to be unfortunate for the Halloween revelers who have chosen the popular "Michael Myers" mask as their costume. Often considered the best of the sequels, THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS is a return to form for the series after the debacle of HALLOWEEN 3. Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Special Edition

A happy young couple gives birth to a horrible monstrosity in this remake of Larry Cohen's 1974 killer baby classic. Graduate student Lenore (Bijou Phillips) has put her education on hold in order to have a child with her architect boyfriend, Frank (James Murray). They're planning a new life together in the country when their unborn child begins growing at an alarming rate, and doctors are forced to conduct an emergency C-section for Lenore's safety. When every medic in the operating room is brutally killed, the frightened new parents rush their newborn home and do their best to pretend everything is normal--but it isn't. Their newborn son, Daniel, is an abomination, and prone to savagely attacking anything--and anyone--that gets in his way. Though Lenora does her best to protect Daniel even after it's plain to see that he can't control his murderous impulses, the evidence that something is terribly wrong becomes too powerful to deny when the mangled corpses of dead animals and people begin turning up in the area, and all signs points back to the demonic little bundle of rage with an unholy appetite. Not to be confused with the 1980s slasher films (though of course meant to be confused with the 1980s slasher films), this spooky series gets its start when an antiques dealer makes a deal with the devil to sell cursed relics. When the dealer backs out of the pact and dies, his niece Micki (Louise Robey), her cousin Ryan (John D. LeMay), and ex-magician Jack Marshak (Chris Wiggins) join forces to track down the evil wares before they do harm. Usually they're too late and must pry the objects out of the hands of owners addicted to their homicidal dolls, wish-granting pens, and killer teacups. This collection presents the third season of the gruesome horror series. Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Sensor Matic
