| | Jacob Young Sideways CD (2008)
Voyage music CDs
$15.05 A thoroughly modern guitarist, Jacob Young (from Norway) was influenced chiefly by masters Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Young's style is of the dense, mood-laden fusion variety particular to ECM Records. Recalling the earliest discs from that label by Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie, SIDEWAYS balances absorbing motifs, chilled-out textures, and flowing, probing solos. Trumpeter Mathias Eick evokes the mellow, cerebral styles of Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler, and ECM vet drummer Jon Christensen is, as expected, ...
| | Cinematic Orchestra Live At The Royal Albert Hall CD (2008)
Voyage songs
$11.39 Is Cinematic Orchestra leader Jason Swinscoe a model for the contemporary maestro, or does his surrounding talent illuminate the simplicity of his contribution? The answer after listening to LIVE: Who cares? This is a supremely moving piece of music that suggests the listener's foolishness for not being there. Swinscoe's expanded Orchestral ensemble allows him to segue from acoustic grace to flittering acid-jazz and back to a middle ground of soulful grooves guided by superlative vocals. The best part is, while it engenders envy, LIVE's intent is to replicate the one-of-a-kind experience in your bedroom, not taunt you for missing the show.
Audio Mixer: Stephen Hodges.

| | Bobby Hutcherson Head On CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Voyage album
$10.39 HEAD ON (1971) is the most ambitious and adventurous work in Bobby Hutcherson's discography. Though the composer/bandleader/vibraphonist did contribute one tune ("Mtume"), HEAD ON mostly features the ambitious compositions and arrangements of Todd Cochran, who also plays piano on the session. The resulting music is dense and polyrhythmic, and bracing, drawing parallels ...
| | Ablaye Cissoko Sira CD (2008)
Voyage CD music
$13.89 The collaboration between African kora player Ablaye Cissoko and trumpeter Volker Goetze is a thing of real late-night beauty. It lives on the tipping point between West African music and ethereal, atmospheric European jazz. In many ways, the disc belongs to Cissoko, whose playing and singing on both traditional and original material powers the whole things, gently lulling everything along, with Goetze's contributions more minor, often punctuating and filling in the material. But it somehow manages to become more than the sum of its parts, a conjoining of talents that brings real magic. The pair set out their stall perfectly ...

| | Rick Wakeman White Rock II CD (1999)
Voyage songs
$15.19 A "rescoring" of the film of the 1976 Winter Olympics -- Wakeman no longer has rights to his original soundtrack -- this is a solid mid-level entry in the Wakeman catalog. Kicking off with some harder-rocking guitar than usual in "Oriental Iceman," this soundtrack reaches its high point with the deft "Dancing on Snowflakes." Die-hard Wakeman fans will find much to like in this synth-driven collection of instrumentals, ...
| | Philipp van Endert Trio CD (2009) (Import)
Voyage album
$18.55 The latest release of guitar player/composer Philipp van Endert explores the very intimate environment of a trio. It is probably the most mature and sensitive performance among the more than 20 CDs on which he has played, either as leader or sideman. This timeless Jazz recording’s success results from the intimate musical relationship between Philipp van Endert and his partners André Nendza and Kurt Billker, through working ...

| | Red Garland Quintet With John Coltrane Dig It! CD (1958) 24 Bit Remastered
Voyage songs
$9.25 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Pianist Red Garland is best known for his work in the 1950s with The Miles Davis Quintet, where he provided a rootsy foil for the trumpeter. But he was already established as a leader of trios and small groups. On this 1957 album for Prestige, the young John Coltrane and Donald Byrd, bassist George Joyner and drummer Arthur Taylor join Garland for a relaxed, fine set.
Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce" starts things off, and Coltrane impatiently burns through a few choruses, pushing bop's limits. On the uptempo, "Crazy Rhythm" (with Paul Chambers on bass), Garland's clear bop lines are both woody and ringing. "Lazy Mae" is an extended, late night, blues meditation; Garland explores melodic block chords, and Coltrane delightfully stretches the boundaries.
Quintet With John ...
| | David Elson Bluegrass Guitar Instrumentals CD (2009)
Voyage album
$12.15 Bluegrass Guitar InstrumentalsAbout the ArtistI started playing guitar in 1958, at the age of 10, having listened to mostly classical music, and having played piano for three years. It was Grady Martin’s lead guitar work on “El Paso” (the 1959 hit by Marty Robbins) that first turned my attention to country picking.I knew I wanted to play bluegrass in 1963, when I heard “Flint Hill Special” (by Flatt and Scruggs). I took up bluegrass banjo, guitar, and fiddle, and have been a bluegrass guitar picker ever since. The ArrangementsFor these arrangements I wrote out the bass parts and chords using music notation software. I then exported the parts in MIDI format, and imported ...
