As he goes down the road of life, mouthing pithy and quotable homilies, he encounters luminaries such as John Lennon, Elvis Presley and JFK. But all the while he can't forget one special girl from his childhood... The title character leads viewers through an accidental travelogue of American social history from the early 1960s through the present in this revisionist fable. Vietnam, desegregation, Watergate, and more are presented from the perspective of Tom Hanks's loveably slow-witted Forrest Gump as he finds himself embroiled in situations he can't quite comprehend. Hanks leads an excellent cast, featuring Robin Wright Penn as Jenny, Forrest's lifelong love; Gary Sinise as the irascible Lt. Dan, his Vietnam superior; Mykelti Williamson as Bubba, a shrimp-loving soldier; and Sally Fields as his devoted mother. Robert Zemeckis's emotional, heartwarming film garnered 13 Academy Award nominations and six wins, including Best Picture, Director, Actor--Tom Hanks, and Adapted Screenplay. Theatrical release: July 6, 1994.
FORREST GUMP made more than $325 million at the domestic box office and more than $675 million worldwide.
The famous, oft-quoted line said by Forrest Gump in the film: "Life is like a box of chocolates," is a total reworking of the original line in the novel which reads: "Let me say this: bein' an idiot is no box of chocolates."
"To make Sinise appear to be a double amputee, the filmmakers relied on a combination of computer artistry, a trick wheelchair that hid Sinise's legs from the knees down and a limber actor... Sinise did suffer a minor leg injury while making 'Gump,' ironically during a scene in which Forrest (Tom Hanks) carries him out of the Vietnam jungle. 'My inner thigh kept bouncing on his shoulder. It was like taking a jackhammer to it,' says Sinise. 'I developed a huge contusion and couldn't bend my leg to get into the wheelchair.'" -- USA TODAY, July 7, 1994

$10.15 Devoted astronomer Dr. Ellie Arroway undertakes an emotional and spiritual journey after receiving the message she's waited for all her life--a mysterious signal beamed in from alien beings, who pass along instructions for building and piloting a craft that will presumably survive the passage from Earth to their home. While struggling to fund her mission, Arroway also struggles with her feelings about the nature of things, particularly after meeting a charismatic New Age believer who questions her disbelief in God. $15.25 Two retiring show people start up a New England country inn with the unique and, one would think, self-defeating idea of being open only on national holidays; however, in this delightful fluff-fest, they achieve instantaneous success. Conflicts arise when they fall for the same woman, and sparks fly -as do their feet - in a variety of inventive, holiday themed song-and-dance productions. Perhaps the best film ever inspired by a song. Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" was introduced in this film.

$32.79 This epic look at the Vietnam War and its effects told through the lives of a tight knit group of friends from a Pennsylvania town was Michael Cimino's second film and established him in the pantheon of American directors. Complex and emotionally raw performances from Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep earned each an Academy Award nomination, and Christopher Walken's portrayal of Nick, who survives capture but is unable to escape its trauma, is a tour de force that earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. With a keen eye for nuance and a carefully structured script, Cimino interweaves the rituals great and small that make up the lives of his characters, creating a poignant sense of what remained constant and what was forever changed by their experience of the war.
Import Blu-Ray/Region A+B pressing. Packaged in hardbook style case. One of the most widely acclaimed films of all time. The Deer Hunter is Michael Cimino's celebrated interpretation of the stresses and dangers - noth physical and emotional - which confront a trio of Pennsylvanian steel-workers when they are sent out to fight in the horror that was the Vietnam War. Starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and John Savage.

$18.46 Giving a history of surfing that stretches from the early 1940s to 2004, RIDING GIANTS is director Stacy Peralta's examination of surfing as a lifestyle, a risk-taker's delight, and a space for increasing innovation and modernization. From the California coastline to the dramatic wild waters of Hawaii, big waves are the aim of some of the top surfers in the sport--Greg Noll, Jeff Clark, and Laird Hamilton. Beginning with old footage of the first surf boards which were long and heavy and made for riding small waves without much movement, and taking viewers through the sport chapter by chapter, this comprehensive documentary shows how the faces of the sport change with advances in surfboard technology. Bit by bit boards become smaller and "beach bums" are more readily accepted by society. The film offers a comic look at cult films like GIDGET and the music of surf guitarist Dick Dale--pop culture influences responsible for introducing the sport and its lifestyle to the mainstream. The most fascinating moments of the film come in its final quarter when Hamilton and his buddies discover the key to tow-in big-wave surfing and break through all imaginable boundaries. RIDING GIANTS shows some true daredevils doing what they do best, and its magnificent photography, comprehensive interviews, and insider perspective are truly a marvel to behold.
