2009 album from the Italian vocalist. Born in Naples but raised in Vienna, Patrizio Buanne spent much of his youth listening to Italian-American singers like Mario Lanza, Dean Martin, Al Martino, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Bennett in his father's pizzeria, and soon fell in love with the music of the 1950s and '60s. He won local singing competitions at an early age and, at 17, performed for Pope John Paul II. In 1999 Buanne returned to Italy, where he enrolled at a university in Rome and worked as a television entertainer. Four years later he met producer Christian Seitz, and the two of them went to the Abbey Road studios in London to record Buanne's debut album, L'Italiano, mainly a cover album of the songs he grew up with, which came out in the U.K. in February 2005. In March 2006, The Italian, a slightly abbreviated version of its British counterpart, was issued in the U.S., followed by a worldwide release of the singer's sophomore record, Forever Begins Tonight, in the fall of that same year. Recorded at EMI Studios & Audio International, London, England. Includes liner notes by Andrew Lloyd Webber. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Composer: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1911 gothic mystery novel The Phantom of the Opera proved to be at least the composer's second-most successful project, behind only Cats, and with the potential to outdo even that blockbuster. The musical opened in London in October 1986 and in New York in January 1988, and both productions were still running (along with many others around the world) when the film version finally premiered in December 2004. Because the same starring performers, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, moved from the West End to Broadway, there was no original Broadway cast recording, the original London cast album serving to represent both stagings. In line with the success of the show, that album, a double-disc set, was also a hit, selling four million copies in the U.S. alone by 1996, with another four million copies of a single-disc highlights version as well. $6.09 When it originally appeared in 1959, this LP was regarded as one of the sonic gems in the RCA Victor "Living Stereo" library, a demonstration-quality stereo record that was also chock-full of supremely enjoyable music, from Leroy Anderson to Tchaikovsky. And original "Shaded Dog" label copies (referring to the early masterings/pressings, and the image of "Nipper" the dog on the label) in mint condition are still highly prized by audiophiles 50 years later. The repertory here, a mix of light orchestral holiday standards, arrangements of popular Christmas songs, and some excerpts from more ambitious classical works (especially The Nutcracker), was ideal for Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, and they ran with it -- Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" is the most famous recording here, a classic that is almost as ubiquitous during the Christmas season as Bing Crosby's recording of "White Christmas." But there's a lot else to love on this album, including "A Christmas Festival," Anderson's arrangement of familiar songs and carols ("Joy to the World" etc.) as an orchestral fantasia, plus "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland." Some of the material may seem to go far afield, but it's all winter-themed and holds together exceptionally well. The 1994 CD reissue was expanded to just over 72 minutes, and offers exceptionally bright, crisp sound. ~ Bruce Eder
