Widower Cedric Brown (Colin Firth) is at his wits' end. His seven children have just scared off their 17th nanny since their mother passed away and seem to have exhausted all local resources. Then, as if by magic, Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) appears out of the blue, literally warts and all. This governess has a different approach to minding Mr. Brown's wild brood; each tap of her walking stick seems to work magic and impart a much-needed lesson. Although the children are determined to chase her away, they soon discover how much they really need her.
But the Brown family has another problem. Stern Great Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury), the late Mrs. Brown's aunt, has been supporting the family and has issued an ultimatum to Cedric: he must marry by month's end or she will cut off all financial support. Cedric is reluctant to marry just anyone, and his options appear to be limited to the garish widow Selma Quickly (Celia Imrie). Will he marry to keep his family intact, or have his children learned enough to help him find love again? Firth and an understated Thompson are in fine form, and Lansbury, Imrie, Derek Jacobi, and Peter Barlow are a delight in their supporting roles, as are the children. The costumes and set are infused with vivid colors that lend a larger-than-life, fanciful feel to the film, adding to the magic. Life's Lessons Fun movie about children and adults learning more than the "5" lessons that Nanny McPhie must teach before she considers her job done. This colorful and fun movie also has some lessons for the viewer before the end credits roll. Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Mary MacDonald, Angela Lansbury, Irma Staunton, and Celia Imry excel in their performances. Submitted by tintin84105 (Woods Cross, UT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? AWESOME I was so surprised when I watched this movie. I bought it about a month ago and I have seen it at least 20 times. You just can't get tired of it. It is truly a classic. Everyone needs to see this movie. And don't think because you are an adult you won't enjoy it. I think we enjoy it the most. Submitted by Tina (Austin, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Nanny Mcphee review
$8.35 A landmark in film history, EASY RIDER blew the studio doors open for more young directors than any film before or since, helping to create the wide-open climate that would lead to the production of many outstanding films in the 1970s. As its director, Dennis Hopper is usually given the lion's share of credit for the film's success, but the revelations of time suggest that the contributions of the late Terry Southern and, to some degree, Jack Nicholson have endowed the film with much of its residual power.
Starring Peter Fonda as Wyatt (alias Captain America) and Hopper as Billy, it traces the hippie duo's adventures as they mount their seriously chopped hogs on a journey to find the real America en route to Mardi Gras. In Arizona, they visit a commune whose members are having a tough time, and in a small Texas town they're jailed for joining a parade. But they're quickly sprung by an ACLU lawyer, the quirky, hard-drinking George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), who accepts their offer to join them on the trip to New Orleans, eager to visit the best whorehouse in the South. EASY RIDER accurately reflects the tensions ...
