Director Ron Howard and star Russell Crowe re-team after their Oscar-winning collaboration, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, for this rousing biopic. It's the true story of boxer James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), a heavyweight contender from New Jersey nicknamed "the Bulldog of Bergen," who lost his fame and fortune during the Great Depression only to win the hearts of the downtrodden during a spectacular comeback. Crowe is masterful as Braddock, with Renee Zellweger playing his wife, and Paul Giamatti as his loyal friend and manager, Joe Gould. The sharply observed script devotes a significant amount of screen time to the domestic struggles of Braddock's family; developing character and place with a wealth of period detail, so when the comeback starts, the payoff is enormous. The matches themselves are unforgettable: raw, intense, riveting, with more than a passing stylistic nod to Martin Scorsese's groundbreaking 1980 film, RAGING BULL. Though it may sound a bit formulaic, one should remember that this is the true and "original" underdog boxer story from which all others hail, and it's riveted together with true craftsmanship. Howard has a real skill for plucking audience members' heartstrings, and the performances are first-rate. Giamatti and Crowe play off each other in a rapport perfectly suited to their roles, especially at the ring, where the one's manic intensity makes a perfect contrast to the other's warrior grace. Theatrical Release: June 3, 2005 Cinderella Man Reviews: "Imbuing his Braddock with uncommon dignity and integrity, Crowe creates an utterly human character..."
-- Ali Jaafar, Sight and Sound "Russell Crowe is rugged and resilient....It's a solid picture..."
-- Tom Charity, Uncut Ranked #6 in Rolling Stone's "Top 25 DVDs Of 2005' -- "If there's any justice, DVD will rescue this rousing drama from shocking box-office indifference."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "[An] emotional true story....This is a good soundtrack that works well with the story."
-- Widescreen Review Staff, Widescreen Review "The film is RAGING BULL minus the rage, though with a motivation that's at least as involving, and a lot more surprising."Wall Street Journal "[T]here's not another actor working in the movies today with Crowe's kind of gravitational pull to authenticity..."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "Out of the ring and opposite Mr. Giamatti, Mr. Crowe eases into the boxer's soft side, at times beautifully; in the ring, he's repulsively believable."-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times "The climactic matchup works splendidly for two reasons. There's so much on the line, and the staging is breathtaking..."-- Mike Clark, USA Today "Crowe's physical acting is miraculous....A top-notch entertainment and as fine a sports movie as one could hope for."

Great film DISAPPOINTING DVD PACKAGE!!! As a fan of Russell?s for over 7 years now I was really looking forward to this film.
I was NOT disappointed. Great film, he & Ron Howard did great jobs.
WHAT I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT:
As a film & DVD fan I would have preferred to purchase the collectors DVD set for the film but I could not, so I had to settle for this version of the film.
When I opened up the package, expecting to find the sheet with the chapter stops listed, bonus features, information about the film, what did I find instead? AN OPEN UP, 4 PAGE ADVERTISEMENT FOR KODAK!!
MY WORD!! WHO MADE THE DECISION TO PUT THIS IN THE DVD PACKAGE INSTEAD OF INFORMATION ON THE FILM OR THE DVD?
The makers of this DVD package should be ashamed of themselves for putting this film out in this condition.
If I want information about Kodak or it?s products A DVD PACKAGE FOR A FILM IS NOT WHERE I WANT TO FIND IT!!!!!!
Bad job Universal & Kodak!!!!!!!

Cinderella Man film
$10.99 For his fourth directorial feature in the span of two years, Clint Eastwood tells the story of a grizzled Korean War vet's reluctant friendship with a Hmong teenage boy and his immigrant family. Set in contemporary Detroit, GRAN TORINO tackles the shifting cultural and economic landscape of not only the Motor City, but America as well. Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski, an unabashed bigot who never heard a racial insult he didn't love. Bitter, haunted, and full of pride, Walt refuses to abandon the neighborhood he's lived in for decades despite its changing demographics as he clings desperately to a mindset long since out of step with the times. When his Hmong neighbor Thao tries to steal his prized muscle car as part of a gang initiation, Walt is forced to grapple with the world around him.
GRAN TORINO's approach to the complicated issue of race relations is equal parts Archie Bunker and CRASH. That is to say, there is nothing subtle about Walt's bigotry, yet his misanthropy knows no bounds, and Eastwood does a remarkable job of finding the humor in Walt's equal opportunity racism. More than simply a racial morality tale, however, GRAN TORINO is about the unlikely bonds that people form to navigate the subtle complexities every day life. Like MILLION DOLLAR BABY, GRAN TORINO explores the challenging yet rich new world that can open up when individuals let down their guard, even if for just a moment. Estranged from his family and his church, and without any sense of personal peace, Walt offers all that he has to Thao and his family, namely wisdom and protection. When tragedy strikes the family, Eastwood allows a little classic Harry Callahan to poke through, but the surprising finale posits a hero that Dirty Harry would never have the guts to be. It's a potent symbolic gesture to Eastwood's own growth as a storyteller.

| | Seinfeld - The Complete Eighth Season DVDs (1996) Full Frame
Cinderella Man review
$26.75 SEINFELD may be partly to blame for America's negative view of New Yorkers. Though it wasn't the first show to assert the rudeness of Gotham's citizens, its characters are selfish to a fault--not that there's anything wrong with that. Self-obsessed comedian Jerry Seinfeld is joined in the cast by his neurotic ex-girlfriend, Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus); his chronically lazy pal, George (Jason Alexander); and Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), who takes the sitcom cliché of the weird neighbor to impressive new heights. Despite their faults (or perhaps because of them), they're some of the most hilariously watchable characters in television history. The eighth season finds Kramer at war with Kenny Rogers Roasters and its incessant bright light. After his quick recovery from fiancée Susan's death, George moves on to a relationship with a prison inmate. Meanwhile, Elaine capitalizes on a widespread love for muffin tops (the baked kind) with a business venture. Jerry's near-obsessive compulsiveness reaches new heights when his beautiful girlfriend (Kristin Davis) unknowingly uses a toilet-tainted toothbrush. Season eight was also memorable for introducing the phrase "yada yada" into the modern lexicon.
