Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Deluxe Edition; CD Included Surprisingly, before HOW SWEET THE SOUND, a full-length documentary had never chronicled decades in the life of Joan Baez, but this film corrects that oversight. This documentary delves into the life, career, and impact of the musician and activist who helped define the 1960s and ‘70s. Joan Baez: Sing Me Home Video Joan Baez: Sing Me Home Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Joan Baez: How 'Relevent' the Sound The DVD/CD with bonus features is definitely a giveaway for the price. The use of old films (thanks for some being saved in a freezer and also for Joan's father doing a lot of filming from his own home camera) we get a lot of very early Joan with her family. The coverage through a 50 year career is never complete enough for this 2.5 hours of main features and bonus features.
Although it covers a 50 year career soaked in singing and social justice issues of a person who has easily become a legend and an icon of days gone by; and yet it is not a documentary that leaves you feeling nostalgic. It is very much a powerful documentary that shows the continued relevance of Joan today as she continues to provide concerts throughout the world introducing new singers to the stage wherever she goes. It is also very relevant as a documentary of the peace and social justice movement from the '60's through the present as Joan continues to stand out and stand up for her ongoing message of non-violence, respect and dignity for all of life. The documentary is as relevant as the sound is sweet. Excellent American Masters feature!

Joan Baez: a Lady Stands by her Convictions I was asked by CDUniverse to write a short review on Joan Baez: Sing Me Home[sic], as I'm sure many of us were.
Here's what I wrote.
"How Sweet the Sound" (the correct name of this DVD/CD set) is an expose on Joan's life, without trivializing who Joan is and what she stands for.
Joan Baez has devoted her life to Humanitarian causes. She has put herself in mortal danger, from war-torn Vietnam to Sarajevo. She has been on the frontlines during volatile Race Relations protests and protests against the Draft.
That she is a Legendary Folk Singer is secondary to her life of giving to others, by making their plight known to the world.
As Joan says (I'm paraphrasing), "you can't sing about it without living it."
Most highly recommended for anyone who cares about Humanity, for Folk Fans in general, and of course for fans of Joan Baez. Submitted by Thomas-bv96vmu5a1g (Inverness, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Joan Baez: Sing Me Home video
$13.39 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a ...

Joan Baez: Sing Me Home film
$17.49 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American Christmas-themed blues and gospel pieces (with a couple of street sermons thrown in) recorded between 1925 and 1955, ranging from down-and-out laments and jailhouse moans to surprising (and occasionally risqué) requests for what Santa can bring down the chimney. Highlights on the first disc include the opening track, the joyous "Christ Was Born on Christmas Morn," recorded in 1925 by comedian and ...

$21.49 Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov (THE SUN, RUSSIAN ARK, MOTHER AND SON) has produced another majestic achievement with ALEXANDRA. In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson in seven years and, understanding that her life is coming ...
