| | Michael Mcdonald This Christmas CD Michael Mcdonald Discography of CDs
Appearing just eight years after IN THE SPIRIT: A CHRISTMAS ALBUM, THIS CHRISTMAS recycles a heavy chunk of that 2001 holiday affair, repeating "White Christmas/Winter Wonderland," "Peace," "On This Night," and "Children Go Where We Send Thee"--about a third of both this record and its predecessor. The rest of This Christmas is filled out with new recordings, including McDonald's quite good original "Every Time Christmas Comes Around," all tending to be a little looser, a little less stuffy, a little more soulful than the rest of IN THE SPIRIT, reaching a peak on the wonderfully woozy New Orleans-styled march through "I'll Be Home for Christmas." These newer cuts help push THIS CHRISTMAS in a different direction than IN THE SPIRIT, making it slightly warmer and cheerier than its predecessor and, in many ways, better and more fun. | | David Gilmour About Face CD (1984) Remastered
This Christmas
$7.59 Personnel: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Barbara Snow, Roddy Lorimer, Tim Sanders, Simon Clark (horns); Steve Winwood (piano, organ); Ian Kewley (piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Bob Ezrin (keyboards); Jon Lord, Anne Dudley (synthesizer); Pino Palladino (bass guitar); Jeff Porcaro (drums, percussion); Louis Jardin, Ray Cooper (percussion); Vicki Brown, Roy Harper, Sam Brown, Mickey Feat (background vocals). David Gilmour released his second solo venture in 1984, following the apparent dissolution of Pink Floyd. He had released a record on his own in 1978, but About Face is much more accessible. Gilmour has a stellar band backing him, including Jeff Porcaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), and Anne Dudley (synthesizer). The songs on About Face show a pop sensibility that Pink Floyd rarely was concerned with achieving. Although the album didn't attract the attention of a Floyd release, several cuts did manage to get airplay. "Until We Sleep" is rife with shimmering synthesizers and cavernous drums, and "Blue Light" was a minor pop hit, with Gilmour's trademark delay-drenched guitar giving way to a driving, horn-laced rocker. Pete Townshend wrote two of the tracks: "Love on ...

$6.79 Personnel: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); David Gilmour; Rick Wills (vocals, bass guitar); Mick Weaver (piano, background vocals); Willie Wilson & The Tunemasters, Willie Wilson (drums, percussion); Debbie Doss, Shirley Roden, Carlena Williams (background vocals). Recording information: Super Bear Studios, France. Photographers: David Gilmour; Vlad Vinski; Ginger Gilmour; Jill Furmanovsky. Unknown Contributor Role: Phil Taylor. By the time of David Gilmour's solo debut, he had not only established himself several times over as an underrated, powerful guitarist in Pink Floyd, but as a remarkably emotional singer, his soothing approach perfectly suited to such songs as "Wish You Were Here." The self-titled album, recorded with journeyman bassist Rick Wills and Sutherland Brothers drummer Willie Wilson, later to be part of the touring Floyd lineup for its Wall dates, isn't a deathless collection of music in comparison to Gilmour's group heights, but is a reasonably pleasant listen nonetheless. Certainly it's much more approachable than ...

| | Chris & Carla Swinger 500 CD (1998) (Import) Germany
This Christmas
$27.09 Recorded with help from fellow Walkabouts and other guest performers, Swinger 500 finds Chris and Carla again doggedly pursuing their multifaceted muse. Beginning with a cryptic instrumental snippet with bells, trumpet and low moaning noises, Swinger 500 as always sees the two using gentle folk and country inspirations as a starting point for something far more all-embracing. As compared to the previous studio album Life Full of Holes, Swinger 500 sounds less classically American and very much inspired by the recent Walkabouts albums of the time, European elegance, nightclub grit and back alleys all combining in a drizzly, rainy evening. Not to say the roots of the two don't show -a great version of Willie Nelson's classic "Funny How Time Slips Away" sits right in the middle of the album, assisted by David Immergluck, ex of Camper Van Beethoven, who adds pedal steel and some mandolin throughout the album. David Barnes of the Bad Livers steps up with banjo and some steel himself, but this is country cast in smoky Continental light -- acts like ...
