Audio Mixer: Jason Lader. If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, THE STORY, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests here, including such L.A. linchpins as Benmont Tench and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, but also Elton John and his arranger, Paul Buckmaster. Tellingly, their presence is felt more than heard, as they never remove the spotlight from Carlile, who remains a singularly powerful singer/songwriter. When the setting is spartan, her voice is haunting and gripping, wrenching out operatic emotions, but GIVE UP THE GHOST trumps THE STORY because Carlile allows herself to lighten up too, to rock again on "Dreams" and jump into the rollicking "Caroline," which does indeed recall the barrelhouse jaunt of HONKY CHATEAU. Carlile still prefers sobriety to levity but it never feels affected; it's music that gets under your skin and cuts to the bone. Paste (magazine) (p.46) - "The production is thick but elegant, applied with full knowledge that the songs could exist beautifully in a spare acoustic-strummed daze, but that they deserve more than that." Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost Songs Give Up The Ghost Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Brandi's "too cool for High School" This is bound to become as classic as it containd many classic elements reminiscent of 60's & 70's artists like the Eagles, the Beatles, and Elton John. Yet these elements are fully encased within the unique stylings of Brandi & her band producing a truly signature sound. I look forward eagerly to many more CD's from this group. They are great!!! Brandi Carlile “Give Up The Ghost" I pretty much liked every song on this cd, which is unusual for me! She has a very unique & different voice, and once you hear it, you will remember it, in a good way. Her music has been compared to KT Tunstall, The Indigo Girls, & Missy Higgins. To me, she sounds a little like Janis Joplin. Her current cd “Give Up The Ghost" is kind of bluesy, a little country, and a little rock & pop thrown in. Sounds like a smorgasboard, but it really does work. Several songs are pretty catchy, and her music has been played on the tv show Grey’s Anatomy, which I think is pretty cool! great music I fell in love with this CD during the first listen, and continued to enjoy it a little bit more each and every listen. Brandi's voice is rich and soulful. Her songs make her a story teller. She has an unique sound that is refreshing in today's autotuned vocals pop scene.

I'm loving this album This is my first time hearing about Brandi Carlile and I feel like I'm been miss out. I love the soulfulness of her music. It feels like it has so much meaning.
It makes me feel like I've jumped into a dramatic scene from Grey's Anatomy.
Her album reminds me of Jewel ( who I love)
I have this whole album on my I pod and listen to it over and over while I go for long runs. It make time go by so much quicker and takes my mind of the miles.
I'm loving this album!!"

Awesome melodies. Brandi Carliles, Giving Up The Ghost, is one of my all time favorite albums in the last year. I have listened to this album more times than I can count. The songs have a country folk sound that is twinged with pop. Brandi has this unique voice that showcases her songwriting and storytelling abilities. Her band members Celloist Josh Neumann, Phil and Tim Hanseroth help make this album unique and memorable. My favorite tracks are Dreams and Dying Day They touch you heart in a soulful way and leave you wanting more. Dreams, has a classic old sound that I remember listening to many years ago. With the help of producer Rick Rubin, this album Giving Up The Ghost is one of Brandis best. I recommend it to any and all ages. Submitted by angel205 (Sulligent, AL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Ed Harcourt Beautiful Lie CD (Import) Import; Thailand
Give Up The Ghost songs
$26.49 UK edition of singer/songwriter Harcourt's fourth full length album. Often compared to such diverse artists as Neil Finn and Tom Waits, Harcourt's touching and personal songwriting puts him in a class all to himself. Features guest appearances from former Blur guitarist (and current solo star) Graham Coxon, The Magic Numbers and BJ Cole. Includes the first single, 'Visit From The Dead Dog'. EMI. 2006.
Personnel: Ed Harcourt; Sally Jackson (violin); Amy Stanford (viola); Jonny Byers (cello). British singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt has been turning out his idiosyncratic brand of quirky, tuneful balladry since 2000, and THE BEAUTIFUL LIE is possibly his most fully realized work to date. Harcourt brings his multi-instrumental talents to bear throughout the album, playing guitar, bass, and a wide array of keyboards in service of his haunting, Rufus Wainwright-esque vocals and potpourri of musical styles. From the romanticism of the sweepingly orchestrated ...

Give Up The Ghost album
$15.05 2006 debut album from this Pop/Rock quintet from London and Sussex. Instead of trying to follow in the footsteps of recent successful Britpop bands like Radiohead, Coldplay and Keane, The Feeling dip back into the '70s and lovingly embrace the influences of 10cc, Supertramp and other like-minded bands who were hip on melody and creative songwriting as well as dynamic song arrangements. Great big no-nonsense, hook-filled, melodic Pop music for the masses, 12 tracks including the singles 'Sewn', 'Fill My Little World' and 'Never Be Lonely'. Universal. 2006.

Meanwhile, the band has done over a hundred live shows, festivals, radio and television performances. In 2005, the band releases the CD 'Still'.
