Ex-X woman Exene Cervenka returned to acoustic music with 2009's SOMEWHERE GONE, an album that fuses spare folk melodies that suggest she's been listening to the Harry Smith anthology with bittersweet country accents that somehow make Cervenka's lyrics cut even deeper. The socio-political insights that dominated much of Cervenka's music of the '90s and the new millennium are less obvious on SOMEWHERE GONE, but as a lyricist Cervenka remains a keen observer of the human condition, and her beat-influenced lyrics reveal an intense honesty and emotional force in her sometimes abstract wordplay. SOMEWHERE GONE is a different animal from Cervenka's acoustic music of the late '80s and early '90s, at once simpler, riskier, and more confident, and it captures one of the great wild talents of her generation in strong and impressive form, still unafraid to take her talent in new directions after more than a quarter-century of blazing trails.

Somewhere Gone album
$14.39 BRAINWASHED was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Marwa Blues" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "Any Road" was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
BRAIN WASHED may be the posthumous successor to 1987's CLOUD NINE, but the 15 years George Harrison took to put this collection of songs together was time well spent. Featuring a small group of musicians including son Dhani, fellow Wilbury Jeff Lynne, and Jools Holland, Harrison's last legacy showcases some of his finest playing wrapped around the kind of weighty topics expected from someone with terminal cancer. Introspective without being the least beat mawkish, the ex-Beatle touches on the metaphoric wonders of dawn ("Rising Sun"), his inevitable demise ("Looking For My Life"), and a fond look back at a former lover ("Never Get Over You").
Lynne's production steers clear of its usual heavy-handed tendencies and instead allows Harrison's playing to shine and come to the fore on cuts like the crying instrumental "Marwa Blues" and the slide guitar-fueled sweetness of "Rocking Chair in Hawaii." The late great one even snags a ukulele and delivers a light and easy version of the standard ...
| | Modern Sounds Of The Knitters CD (2005)
Somewhere Gone CD music
$14.15 THE MODERN SOUNDS OF THE KNITTERS pretty much picks up where its predecessor left off. Alvin, John Doe, Exene, and company twang up the old X tune "Burning House of Love" and Alvin's own "Dry River," while adding rock energy and endearing punk imprecision to tradition-minded arrangements of songs by country stars Jimmie Driftwood and Bill Anderson. The closing version of Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" is a left-field send-up that ends this reunion album on an appealingly good-humored note.
The Knitters were ...
| | Laura Branigan Over My Heart CD (1993)
Somewhere Gone music CDs
$9.69 At the age of 36, Laura Branigan felt it was time to sing more about heartache and the pains of failing relationships than to give her music the same kind of pop amiability found on past hits like "Self Control" and "Gloria." But the real problem with Over My Heart is that each and every track gets doused with an overabundance of thirty-something insipidness and routine-sounding lyrical drivel. Even her Spanish can't pull her through, and sluggish efforts like Michael Bolton's "It's Hard Enough Getting Over You" and "Didn't We Almost Win It All" are mired in a barrage of "what if"-styled romanticism. The one thing that Branigan does have going for her is her voice, which sounds fresh and crisp despite her clichéd material. The title track and "How Do I Help You Say Goodbye" offer up the most potential, but there's just too much beach-walking throughout her songs to create any sort of real impact, even for the adult contemporary crowd. Even the novelty of "Mujer Contra Mujer" and "Mangwane" wears off before their endings, and Gloria Estefan's "Love Your Girl" is a tad interesting but suffers from the rest of the album's heart-heaviness. Upon its release, Over My Heart failed to chart a single and even soft rock radio stations barely gave it any notice. ...
| | Dolly Parton Backwoods Barbie CD (2008)
Somewhere Gone songs
$12.05 The inaugural release on her own Dolly Records finds the ever-mercurial Dolly Parton moving away from the bluegrass/acoustic-oriented sound she explored on her albums for the Sugar Hill label from 1999 to 2005. Never content to stay in one place, she traverses a wide array of styles on BACKWOODS BARBIE. Opening track "Better Get to Livin'" has an anthemic, contemporary-country feel that's overtly radio-friendly. The jazzy, piano-flecked "The Lonesomes" adds an easy swing to the proceedings. "I Will Forever Hate Roses" and "Made of Stone" offer proof that Dolly still has a way with a good old country ballad.
While most of the tunes on BACKWOODS BARBIE (including the incisive, autobiographical title track) ...
