England's Friendly Fires is an indie rock band that isn't afraid to unleash danceable beats or irresistible melodies, drawing on the best of dance-rock, synth pop, and shoegaze-influenced atmospherics. The band's full-length self-titled debut puts all these influences on proud display, and while one might immediately invoke comparisons to Franz Ferdinand, LCD Soundsystem, and New Order, the musical ride is a thoroughly enjoyable one. Album opener "Jump in the Pool," with its lush, percolating rhythms, is a highlight, but all of FRIENDLY FIRES delivers the dance-rock goods.

Rolling Stone (p.125) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "At heart, they are strict pop formalists, packing each track with peppy hooks, gushy New Romantic choruses and Talking Heads-style nerd funk." Spin (p.90) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he trio offers copious catchy bits, more tonal variation than the usual guitar-plus-beats norm, and an appealingly pleading frontman in Ed Macfarlane." Clash (magazine) (p.124) - "Their self-titled album is an indie pop explosion, sprinkled with some magic dust and constantly oozing '90s dance, European techno and some lovely teen romance." Clash (magazine) (p.63) - Ranked #30 in Clash's "The 40 Best Albums of 2008" -- "Like the beautiful love-child of Hot Chip and Talking Heads, this is one band who deserve your attention..." Friendly Fires Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) More Greatness? Yes Please To start I need to say that the first disc of this compilation is the regular Friendly Fires self titled album which I would give 5 stars without a second thought. One of the strongest debuts I've dug into in recent memory, I was hooked from the first time I heard 'Jump in the Pool'. The reverse side is the real plus for fans. Three new songs including the new drum infused single 'Kiss of Life' which you may have seen them play live. All three are great listens. AND five remixes. Umm. Yes. Each is worthwhile in its own way. Air France steals the show with 'Skeleton Boy' Ambient, almost indistinguishable, vocal loops backed by a great sequenced dance beat. What's not to love. The second disc is a DVD with a full 50 minute performance and four videos, which I'm sure is great, but be careful, this version isn't region coded for North America, so I've yet to indulge. Even with that being said, I'd still fully recommend the expanded edition for any fan that wants more, and more so for any PERSON who ever so much as tapped their toes to 'Burning Down the House' Submitted by Mark (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Friendly Fires songs
$11.18 (MP3 Available for Download) With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Muse's Matthew Bellamy, and Justin Hawkins of the Darkness all elbow each other for space here, creating cheerful genre-bending where Sweet gives way to the Scissor Sisters, ...

Friendly Fires album
$15.55 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in the process, THE CIRCLE, the band's fifth studio effort of the `00s, is a back-to-roots return to form focused on uplifting ...

| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CDs (2009)
Friendly Fires MP3 Album
$22.09 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of his melodic fingerpicked guitar style on both acoustic and electric guitar. He even works up to a smoldering swamp rock shuffle, a la J.J. ...

While a student at Eastern New Mexico University in nearby Portales, Jay played lead guitar and wrote songs for the Ivy Jives, a well-known regional group. The Ivy Jives had releases on Jaro Records, a subsidiary of Top Rank Records out of New York. Working at Petty’s studio, Jay became acquainted with King Curtis, Tommy Alsup, Waylon Jennings, Bob Montgomery, the Champs (Seals, Croft, and Burgess), and Larry Parks (drummer for Roy Orbison). In the early 1960’s, Jay played lead guitar in a Booker T and the MG’s road band and worked shows with the Markees, the Kingsmen, and the Surfaris. He and Larry Parks wrote songs together, and one of their first was “Bread and Butter” (see note) which led to their becoming staff writers for prestigious Acuff-Rose Music Publishing Company in Nashville. Among popular releases written by Turnbow and Parks at that time are “Birds are for the Bees,” “Oh Girls,” and “Hey-O-Daddy-O,” all recorded by the Newbeats. (Bob Finnicum was a co-writer on these three cuts.) Along with the late Mr. Wesley Rose, Jay and Larry produced the Sparkles for Hickory Records. “No Friend of Mine” and “Oh Girls” were two of Jay and Larry’s more popular songs cut by the Sparkles. In the 1970’s and early 1980’s, Jay performed in the Houston area and taught guitar for a large music store chain. Working in the Houston Gulf Coast, Jay performed shows with many popular entertainers ...
