Ex-X woman Exene Cervenka returned to acoustic music with 2009's SOMEWHERE GONE, an album that fuses spare folk melodies that suggest she's been listening to the Harry Smith anthology with bittersweet country accents that somehow make Cervenka's lyrics cut even deeper. The socio-political insights that dominated much of Cervenka's music of the '90s and the new millennium are less obvious on SOMEWHERE GONE, but as a lyricist Cervenka remains a keen observer of the human condition, and her beat-influenced lyrics reveal an intense honesty and emotional force in her sometimes abstract wordplay. SOMEWHERE GONE is a different animal from Cervenka's acoustic music of the late '80s and early '90s, at once simpler, riskier, and more confident, and it captures one of the great wild talents of her generation in strong and impressive form, still unafraid to take her talent in new directions after more than a quarter-century of blazing trails.
Third album from the South African Legend, which won three Awards at the South African Music Awards Including the Best African Pop Album!

| | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Somewhere Gone CD music
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | John Fogerty Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Somewhere Gone CD music
$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't ...

$17.95 This 1988 collection from Brighton, England, punk ballers Peter & the Test Tube Babies falls just one song short of 1996's Punk Singles Collection, but the 22 tracks that grace Castle's lazily titled Best of Peter & the Test Tube Babies remain as nefarious, off the wall, and infectious as they did in the ...
| | My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult CD (2004) Remastered
Somewhere Gone album
$10.39 In 2004 Rykodisc reissued and remastered My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult's first three releases, adding bonus tracks and doing some minor remixing. The Kooler Than Jesus EP gets the biggest facelift, with a number of tracks added and a title change to just the band's name. Now the EP that collected early 12"s is the CD that collects far more. It's great for the hardcore, but it weakens the EP's impact, turning Kooler's stimulating one-night stand into a lackluster commitment. Both sides of the Cuz It's Hot single are included, with the A-side being edited into a tighter mix. Two tracks from the Showgirls soundtrack are tacked on to the end but they were recorded five years after anything else here, and their big sound is jarring. The Kooler Than Jesus tracks still stand-up because of the sleazy, campy lyrics and some creative structure (dig those crazy lutes on "Resisting the Spirit"). Program ...

Somewhere Gone songs
$35.49 LIZARD can be seen as the third album in the trilogy that makes up Crimson's first phase, which began with IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING. The musical and lyrical concepts are more complex than on the first two albums, the arrangements more elaborate. Pete Sinfield's lyrics, already full of surreal mystical imagery, changed by turns more inaccessible and slightly psychedelic. Horns play a much larger role on LIZARD, the horn section injecting some punch into the production, and Mel Collins' flute and sax emerging as an important solo voice.
Things turn slightly harsher on tracks like "Indoor Games," a catalogue of people's private indiscretions, and "Happy Family" an allegory obviously about the then-current breakup of the Beatles. As always, there's a beautiful ballad ("Lady of the Dancing Water," singer Gordon Haskell's finest moment) included amidst all the uproar. Crimson's peers Yes are even represented, as Jon Anderson makes a guest vocal appearance on the title cut, a throwback to the semi-mythical lyric approach of KC's debut.
Lizard is very consciously jazz-oriented -- the influence of Miles Davis (particularly Sketches of Spain) being especially prominent -- and very progressive, even compared with the two preceding albums. The pieces are longer and have extensive developmental sections, reminiscent of classical music, and the lyrics are more ornate, while the subject matter is more exotic and rarified -- epic, Ragnarok-like battles between good and evil that run cyclically. The doom-laden mood of the first two albums is just as strong, except that the music is prettier; the only thing missing is a sense of humor. Jon Anderson of Yes guests on one key number, "Prince Rupert Awakes" (which vocalist/bassist Gordon Haskell never completed), and the album is stronger for his presence. At the time of its release, some critics praised Lizard for finally breaking with the formula and structure that shaped the two ...
