| | Otis Redding Best: See & Hear CD Otis Redding Discography of CDs
Otis Redding's recording career was tragically and woefully brief and while he recorded enough classic gems to assure his place as one of the finest soul singers to ever meet a microphone, he was really just starting to match his immense talent to suitable material when he died in 1967. His legacy is solid and deserved, but one wonders what would have come next had he lived. Wishes aren't horses, though, and we're left with a body of work that's solid but feels somehow incomplete. This CD/DVD combo set makes for a quick portrait of Redding, and features the studio recordings of classics "Respect," "Try a Little Tenderness," "Pain in My Heart," and "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," as well as the heartbreaking Redding original "I've Got Dreams to Remember," all of which are darn near perfect examples of deep soul. The DVD catches Redding on the 1967 Stax/Volt tour (along with performances by Booker T. & the MG's and Sam & Dave) shortly before his death. It's a visual reminder of what we had and what we've lost.

| | Preachermann Negroes Stay Crunchy In Milk CD (2007)
Best: See & Hear songs
$12.69 At a time when the art of the live performance is losing ground to homemade internet videos, and neophyte music groups are being awarded record deals without ever having wooed a single live audience, New York City's Preachermann testifies to the tried and true formulas for achieving lasting success in a 'here today gone tomorrow culture': hard-work, talent, perseverance, charisma, and humility. His voice, lyrics and stage performance stand on soul-shoulders as varied as the Isley Brothers, Lenny Kravitz, Ritchie Havens, Bob Dylan, Al Greene, and James Brown, and yet all of these influences bow to his own remarkably deep and refined endowments. What sets him apart from his peers is that his sultry brand of neo-soul is not only fresh, it is fearless; not merely sensuous, but conscious. And unlike so many modern ...
| | Somi If The Rains Come First CD (2009)
Best: See & Hear album
$12.25 With a beautiful voice enhanced by overdubbing techniques, Somi joins the elite ranks of first-class world music jazz-influenced singers with this, her third CD. Joined by the likes of the fabulous electric and acoustic keyboardist Toru Dodo, among others, Somi employs an ethereal, surreal, distanced sound, coupled with earthiness and village ceremonial elements to create soulful tunes that by some standards approach pop music, and in other instances, pure romantic spirit songs. Most of the lyrics are in English (she was born in Illinois) and enunciated well, and embrace themes of home, the great outdoors, love, longing, belonging, and wistfully wondering why. But the ...
