$9.11 | | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas Trilogy CDs (1996) With DVD
Sacred Music: Verdi/Beethoven/Bach film
$34.55 In 2004, Trans-Siberian Orchestra finished their "Christmas trilogy" with the massive -- some would say ponderous -- The Lost Christmas Eve. Wasting none of the holiday season's precious shopping time, the Christmas Trilogy box set landed two weeks after that album, giving the band's loyal fan base a set to give -- some would say inflict -- to their friends. Then again, maybe they'll just want to hold on to the set since there's a DVD with appearances by Jewel and Michael Crawford and the lavishly illustrated booklet includes all the lyrics and background stories. You really should dabble in Trans-Siberian's dramatic, huge world of Christmas music through the eyes of classic rock before laying down the money for the set. If you just need a bit of this 60-piece, the first album is the most inspired, but it's not enough for most who get hooked. Although the next two albums gave diminishing returns, Trans-Siberian ...
| | Britney Spears Singles Collection CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Box Set
Sacred Music: Verdi/Beethoven/Bach review
$79.98 A companion to the tight, 17-track The Singles, this deluxe box set gathers up the 29 singles Britney Spears released between 1999 and 2009 -- including the new Max Martin-written single "3," the enticement for hardcore fans to buy The Singles -- presenting them as two-track CD-singles with one B-side per disc, adding a DVD containing almost all of the accompanying music videos. Naturally, this contains far more songs than the single-disc set, including lots of tracks from the start of the new millennium, an area that the 17-cut compilation downplays. Unlike that disc, this box isn't meant for casual listening -- it's an effort to listen to or rip all 29 discs -- but it's a collectors' item, one to be looked at as much as listened to. Those collectors may be irked that the ...

| | Carole King Natural Woman: The Ode Collection (1968-76) CDs (1994) Jewel; Box Set
Sacred Music: Verdi/Beethoven/Bach movie DVD
$15.99 The two-disc set A NATURAL WOMAN collects the highlights of Carole King's eight-year tenure at Lou Adler's Ode Records. Of course, of the several albums she released between 1968 and 1976, one stands out above all others; TAPESTRY is an all-time classic, the definitive '70s singer/songwriter album and the epitome of piano rock. A NATURAL WOMAN treats the album with the respect it deserves, including it in its entirety.
What's remarkable about this 36-track collection is that as brilliant as songs like "It's Too Late," "Where You Lead" and "So Far Away" are, the rest of the set is nearly up to their level. In fact, listening to the songs from the follow-up RHYMES AND REASONS, it's remarkable that this album didn't match the stratospheric commercial success of its predecessor. ...
