Lyricists: Emil Schult; Florian Schneider. Personnel: Florian Schneider (flute, synthesizer, vocoder, electronic drums, electronics). Although Kraftwerk's first three albums were groundbreaking in their own right, Autobahn is where the group's hypnotic electronic pulse genuinely came into its own. The main difference between Autobahn and its predecessors is how it develops an insistent, propulsive pulse that makes the repeated rhythms and riffs of the shimmering electronic keyboards and trance-like guitars all the more hypnotizing. The 22-minute title track, in a severely edited form, became an international hit single and remains the peak of the band's achievements -- it encapsulates the band and why they are important within one track -- but the rest of the album provides soundscapes equally as intriguing. Within Autobahn, the roots of electro-funk, ambient, and synth pop are all evident -- it's a pioneering album, even if its electronic trances might not capture the attention of all listeners. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Germanic in approach and delivery, this record gets under the skin and infuriates as you find yourself compelled to hum the melodies. A significant record in the development of electronic music, and not to be confused with other "kraut rock" efforts from the school of mid-70s prog, this is the album from which countless bands borrowed riffs--passages of the Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and New Order are to be found among the five lengthy tracks. Don't be fooled: Kraftwerk were there at least five years in advance. Great for driving on the motorway in Europe, incidentally!Spin (p.87) - "[The album] buoys jolly German-language lyrics over humming synths and creates the sound of the future." Spin (9/01, p.134) - Included in Spin's "5 Essential Krautrock Records" - "...A quick confection about zooming along the expressways of Germany....they'd discovered the joy of mechanical repetition..." Q (10/95, p.141) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...23 minutes of synthetically simulated road miles, with several fascinating segments and hauntingly lovely tunes....A remarkable journey--and one that needs to be heard on headphones..." Q (Magazine) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "From 1974 to the early '80s, they were so ahead of the field as to appear almost superhuman, as instantly proved by the epic title track of 'Autobahn'..." Autobahn
$10.45 With his third album, singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III would employ a full band, fleshing out his folky songs, rocking the rockers, and giving a little bounce to fun ditties like "Dead Skunk." But 1971's ALBUM II finds Wainwright still in stripped-down, acoustic, coffee shop mode, which suits his intimate, confessional tunes just fine. Though he suffered comparisons to Bob Dylan, Wainwright is his own stylist: he has an off-hand manner with description, he isn't afraid to show sentiment, and his comedy can be both cutting and charming. The highlight of the album is undoubtedly the witty, desperate, and heartbreaking "Motel Blues," but there's also the silly nod to new fatherhood, "Be Careful There's a Baby in the House," written about Wainwright's new-born son Rufus. Within the year to come, Loudon Wainwright III would enjoy his brief moment of fame with the single "Dead Skunk." Reaching the number 16 position on the Billboard chart and appearing ...

Electric Light Orchestra's third album showed a marked advancement, with a fuller, more cohesive sound from the band as a whole and major improvements in Jeff Lynne's singing and songwriting. | | Beatles Capitol Albums Vol. 2 CDs (2006) Limited Edition; Remastered; Box Set; Long
Autobahn
$56.89 The Beatles: John Lennon, George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, bass guitar); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums). The second volume of Capitol's box set reissues of the Beatles' American album releases is tailor-made for collectors. The Beatles albums currently available on CD are based on the original British issues, so THE CAPITOL ALBUMS marks the CD debut of THE EARLY BEATLES, BEATLES IV, HELP!, and RUBBER SOUL, all of which were released in the U.S. in 1964. The songs appear in both their mono and stereo mixes (the latter is a particular enticement since the tracks from, say, BEATLES FOR SALE were previously available only in mono). The set also features the original stereo mixes of HELP! and RUBBER SOUL (which are different from the digital remixes that appear on the standard issue CDs of those albums). Naturally, the music is fantastic, and with the remarkable new sound, extensive notes, and a photo-packed booklet, this is a sure bet for Beatles fanatics. The set is available ...
