It is a testament to Kraftwerk's brilliance that some 30 years after pioneering the electronica revolution they were able to keep pace with the legions of acts they inspired. 2003's TOUR DE FRANCE SOUNDTRACK is as crisp, modern, and appealing as any minimal techno turned out in the 2000s, and is all the more impressive for its direct link to the band's legacy from the 1970s. Like the music on their landmark releases AUTOBAHN and TRANS-EUROPE EXPRESS, the meticulously calibrated synth-scapes of TOUR DE FRANCE SOUNDTRACKS conjure visions of machines churning in mechanized perfection and sensations of robotic ecstasy.
The cerebral yet infectious beats that characterize the three versions of the single and tracks like "Chrono" and "Titanium" are ambitious and compelling, full of clicking polyrhythms and edgy, icy funk. As usual, these are layered with electronic micro-melodies and Vocoder-filtered vocals. The theme of France's famous bike race plays heavily in the album, from the song titles to the heatbeat and heavy breathing in "Electro Kardiogramm." Kraftwerk began this project in 1983, when they released the "Tour de France" single; though it took the band 20 years to complete the album, the results are fresh as anything Kraftwerk ever released.Rolling Stone (9/4/03, p.136) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Masterminds Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider mapped out the continent of electronic pop, and even now they belong and thrive there as much as anyone..." Q (10/03, p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...There are moments where the glory years are emulated: 'La Forme's' gorgeous instrumental section and the eerie 'Regeneration' both exult in Kraftwerk's extraordinary magic..." Uncut (01/04, pp.84-7) - Ranked #12 in Uncut's "Albums Of The Year 2003" The Wire (01/04, p.38) - Included in Wire's "50 Records Of The Year [2003]" Mojo (Publisher) (9/03, p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A work of near-genius..." Purchase Tour De France CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Kirk Franklin Christmas CD (1995)
Tour De France album
$8.49 In addition to energized versions of such treasured Christmas songs as "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Silent Night," Franklin & the Family contribute several non-traditional songs that explore the depth of God's love and the Christian basis for the holiday. "Now Behold the Lamb," for example, is a ballad that testifies to the truth of salvation, and features stirring ensemble singing, strong solo vocalists, and plenty of enthusiastic exclamations. The deeply funky "Jesus Is the Reason for the Season" kicks things up a notch with its bumping rhythm and infectious chorus. With its mix of old and new musical styles and its impassioned performances, CHRISTMAS is sure to please those looking for a meaningful and musically fresh holiday album.
Contemporary gospel star Kirk Franklin made one of his most accessible and commercially successful records with CHRISTMAS. From Franklin's heartfelt spoken-word intro to the breezy, smoothed-out version of "O Come All Ye Faithful," CHRISTMAS blends devout Christian messages and the power of traditional gospel with contemporary R&B and hip-hop flavors. It's no coincidence that Franklin's 17-piece chorus is called "the Family," because the entire record is suffused with the warmth and intimacy of a family-oriented holiday event.
Personnel: Kirk Franklin, Tamela Mann, Dalon Collins, Chris Simpson, Sheila Brice, Stephanie Glynn, David Mann, De Clinkscale, Jeanette Johnson, Carrie Davis-Young, Kesha Grandy (vocals); Ray Fuller (acoustic & electric guitar); Ricky Grundy (strings); Donald Hayes (saxophone); Bobby Sparks (piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Buster & Shavoni (synthesizer, percussion); Jerome Allen (bass); Erik Morgan (drums).

| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
Tour De France CD music
$18.94 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this jumbled, almost haphazard sequencing is a little disconcerting since it appears to follow no true rhyme or reason. Nevertheless, scattershot is still plenty entertaining when the music is as good as this, and this does have all the Bee Gees' big hits, plus live versions of songs they gave to others, so it's a good, swift way to get all this stuff at once -- at least for those who don't already have The Record or some other Bee Gees hits collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Luther Vandross - Live At Wembley DVD (1989)
Tour De France music CDs
$9.69 It is a major testament to the popularity of soft soul singer Luther Vandross that he managed to sell out ten "Standing Room Only" concerts at the London's massive Wembley Arena. The video release contains eleven Vandross's best songs, including "A House Is Not a Home," "Never Too Much," and "Searching."

| | Prince Purple Rain CD (1984) SDTK
Tour De France album
$9.49 A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge commercial smash, and the first real international introduction for many people to a star-in-waiting. 'Darling Nikki' accidentally set the PMRC ball rolling, but the heady lilt of the title track and the crushing 'When Doves Cry' can pardon him that.
Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Matt "Dr." Fink (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z (percussion).
Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Peggy Mac, David Riukin.
Additional personnel: Apollonia (vocals); Novi Novog (violin, viola); David Coleman, Suzie Katayama (cello).
| | Michael Jackson: Dangerous - The Short Films DVD (1993) Subtitled
Tour De France CD music
$9.69 After pioneering the epic music video with his ground breaking short movies for "Thriller," "Bad" (directed by the acclaimed feature auteur Michael Jackson,) and others, the King of Pop's next project was awaited with great expectations. And Jackson, as always, managed to meet these with his album, "Dangerous," for which he continued his pattern of making innovative, trend-setting videos. DANGEROUS is a home video which includes the uncut versions of these videos -- from the crazy morphing effects of "Black and White" to the exotic royalty of "Remember The Time."
In addition, the previously unseen short film "Gone Too Soon" plus "Who Is It," which has never been released in the U.S., are included.
