| | Jay-Z Blueprint 3 Vinyl LP Record Jay-Z Discography of CDs
On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter. Kanye West is in the producer's chair for seven tracks, and it's clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original. "What We Talkin' About" begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z enumerates (with an intriguing lack of detail) what he's said and what's been said about him, ending with a nod not to the past but the future (and Barack Obama). There's plenty more lyrical violence to come, but most of the targets are much safer than they were eight years earlier (i.e. opening single and smash hit "D.O.A. [Death of Auto Tune]" (railing against the oft-reviled '00s vocal-tweaking phenomenon is not quite as "politically incorrect" as Jay claims through song). Simply put, the production's big-name solid, the rhyming on poing, as Jay-Z becomes more content with his dominance as a rap godfather in 2009.Rolling Stone (p.74) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Jay-Z remains a virtuoso, and BLUEPRINT 3 has the usual quotient of punch lines and casually inventive flows..." Entertainment Weekly (p.63) - "BLUEPRINT is hip-hop as big business, and Jay retains his CEO throne." -- Grade: B+ Billboard - "With witty rhymes, pertinent collaborations and stellar productions from the likes of Timbaland and No I.D., among others the long-awaited BLUEPRINT 3 doesn't disappoint." Blueprint 3 album
$14.59 Released in conjunction with the similarly packaged Ghetto Dictionary: The Mystery, Ghetto Dictionary: The Art of War is a 20-track compilation of Bounty Killer tracks organized around a single theme: his supremacy over other DJs. The practice of DJ battling is a long-standing and venerable one in the dancehall reggae world, and Bounty Killer is one of its most respected practitioners. But as impressive as his lyrical flow and powerful delivery are, he is hobbled on this collection ...
| | Murphy Lee Murphy's Law CD (2003)
Blueprint 3 CD music
$10.59 Murphy Lee of St. Lunatics had the ultimate hip-hop coming-out party on the featured track of the highly anticipated 2003 soundtrack to BAD BOYS II, trading rhymes (and even granted equal billing) with two of the most prominent rap luminaries of the past decade, Nelly & P. Diddy. The infectious "Shake Ya Tailfeather" shot to number one, and following its success comes Murphy's debut solo set, MURPHY'S LAW, a lively collection of lyrical acrobatics about women, cars, and new slang set to intense, dance-floor-ready beats.
Lee's certainly about inclusion, and MURPHY'S LAW is a continual party with guests stopping by from all over; the best gathering shows up on the pounding, rock-inflected "This Goes Out" with Nelly, Lil' Wayne, Lil Jon, and many others celebrating hip-hop from various corners of the country. And Lee's subtle country drawl plays well with others as it preaches of an inviting rap world. Even when he claims to eschew hooks--which he and Jermaine Dupri do on "Wat Da Hook Gon Be"--a hook somehow wends its way to the top. MURPHY'S LAW is about just that--constantly catchy ...

As if Ice Cube didn't have enough going on in the first few years of the 21st century with his successful and prolific film career, the rap superstar unveiled TERRORIST THREATS, the second Westside Collection album, in late 2003. Reuniting with fellow West Coast rappers WC and Mack 10, Cube leads the Connection on tunes that pull topics from the headlines, such as the title track and "Call 9-1-1," where lyrics remind listeners that "911 ain't an area code/it's a gangsta mode." Whether riffing on terrorism or espousing the virtues of gin, the Connection crew gets its point across with the ...

| | Devendra Banhart What Will We Be Vinyl LP (2009) Bonus Tracks
Blueprint 3 CD music
$27.75 Setting aside the grand orchestrations of Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, Devendra Banhart's What Will We Be is everything its predecessor was not: straight-forward, cleanly produced, consistently laid-back (to nearly Jack Johnson proportions), and free of ambition. Banhart enlists the same band as last time (Noah Georgeson, Greg Rogove, Luckey Remington, and Rodrigo Amarante), but hired production whiz Paul Butler, whose records with A Band of Bees are some of the most striking productions of the 2000s. The double-tracked vocals give the album the same air as Banhart's early four-track experiments, but there's no haunted quality, just an occasional hippie-dippie aside in his delivery. Recorded in Northern California, What Will We Be often has the same slacker sensibilities and scent of ocean breeze that ...
