| | Whispers Thankful CD Whispers Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The generally earthy passions of soul and R&B can sometimes mask their very intimate connection to black gospel music, a fact that isn't lost on veteran L.A. group The Whispers. During their late-`70s to early-`80s peak they were churning out silky pop-R&B hits like "And the Beat Goes On" and "Rock Steady," up-tempo dance tracks that fit easily within the decadent club sounds of the post-disco era. Still going strong nearly 30 years later, the group have refocused their energies on music for praise with their 2009 effort, THANKFUL. And if such a revamp suggests that the Whispers' music is now a scrubbed, anodyne version of its former self, nothing can be further from the truth as funky grooves and soulful harmonies attest to a group reinvigorated by the change to a spiritual format. | | Stevie Wonder Time 2 Love CD (2005)
Thankful
$13.69 During times of extreme political and social change, Stevie Wonder's voice and songwriting served as cultural and spiritual guideposts to many a listener, often lending insight and a barometer with which to measure the ways of the world. But that was largely during the golden phase of his career, generally regarded as being the late '60s through 1980's Hotter Than July. His work in the mid-'80s through the '90s was marginal in comparison, only hinting at glimpses of former brilliance, sugar-coated by over-polished production and radio-friendly content. So with a decade passing since his last full-length, 1995's Conversation Piece, people waited with bated breath for a sign of his return...and wondered which Wonder would show up: would it be the socially conscious genius who wrote anthems for a generation, or the R&B ...
| | Brian Mcknight Gemini CD (2005)
Thankful
$10.65 Personnel: Brian McKnight (vocals, keyboards); Juvenile (rap vocals); Tyron Chase (guitar); Chris Loftin (bass guitar); Prescott Ellison (drums). How do you approach an album that's lush and elegant on one hand and lyrically nasty on the other? Bring your lover and your playful side because Gemini is an aptly named loose and free bedroom winner from Brian McKnight. The cool crooner has had little trouble going platinum in the past, but his albums have also been a bit too patchy, too concerned with being contemporary, and too clogged with guest stars to let McKnight's overabundance of talent really stretch its legs. Rappers Juvenile, Skip, and Akon liven up the slick and sneaky "Watcha Gonna Do?," while Talib Kweli's short appearance on "She" doesn't feel tacked on at all. That's where the concessions ...
| | Jaheim Ghetto Classics CD (2006) Parental Advisory
Thankful
$15.65 Personnel: Jaheim (vocals); Shakira Atily, Eritza Laues (vocals); Jadakiss, Styles P (rap vocals). Audio Mixers: Kevin "KD" Davis; Kam Houff; "You Can Ask" Giz; Phil Tan. Recording information: Da Mill, NJ; Hit Factory, Miami, FL; Wisdon Palace, Jersey City, NJ. Photographer: Kai Regan. Arrangers: Bernard Belle; "You Can Ask" Giz. GHETTO CLASSICS is Jaheim's third effort, an album heavily rooted in traditional R&B, and also one of his strongest. Don't be misled by the "traditional" tag, however. Like most contemporary R&B, Jaheim's music is deeply influenced by hip-hop, and the layered, top-tier production from KayGee (of Naughty by Nature) gives this ...
| | Isley Brothers Baby Makin' Music CD (2006)
Thankful
$10.89 The Isley Brothers: Ronald Isley (vocals); Ernie Isley (guitar, background vocals). Additional personnel: Jermaine Dupri, R. Kelly. The follow-up to the Isley's excellent 2003 album BODY KISS gives all indications that the legendary R&B outfit is still going strong some 50 years into its career. Decades before young, hip-hop-influenced urban contemporary singers were swinging and swaying their way into women's good graces, Ronald Isley was laying down the blueprint as the original mac crooner, and BABY MAKIN' MUSIC proves he's still ...
