Now featuring Lingerie, a former superfan who replaces the gone-solo Pleasure P, Pretty Ricky take another step toward autonomy on their self-titled album, produced entirely by member Diamond Blue. Officially the group's third album, following the leaked and subsequently shelved Eighties Babies, Pretty Ricky does not offer much in the way of development or maturity. As narrow-minded as ever, the group's lyrics are split between conveying what they are going to do to their prospective conquests and what those prospective conquests are going to do for them. The press bio describes the group as "borderline raunchy," but who knows where that line exists when "There's a stripper pole in my bedroom, and it's calling for you" is the album's warmest sweet nothing? "Leave that p*ssy purple like Barney" and "Slice you like Freddy Krueger, don't need no Kama Sutra" are much more representative. ~ Andy Kellman

Even when disregarding the words, the songs don't leave much of an impression -- they're functional without much in the way of memorable features. Enjoyment of this monotony requires a low standard for loverman R R&B, unless it is approached as comedy. ~ Andy Kellman

| | Pretty Ricky Bluestars CD (2005)
Pretty Ricky CD music
$10.09 "Get You Right," a smooth throwback ballad from Miami outfit Pretty Ricky's debut, BLUESTARS, features a hardcore rap that name-checks 1990s groups H-Town and Jodeci. While the four youthful brothers of Pretty Ricky were likely in grade school when these artists had their hits, it's a fitting reference; the quartet's sound reveals an innate feel for the New Jack Swing sound of that time. This approach is evident in both the record's production and its raw sensuality, and the overall vibe is updated with a Dirty South sensibility.
Pretty Ricky features three rappers--Slick, Spectacular, and Diamond--augmented by the resonant voice of Pleasure, whose alluring style falls somewhere between Stevie Wonder and R. Kelly. The subject matter of BLUESTARS tends toward that of the latter (but often hints at the depth of the former), moving from seductions sweet and innocent ("I Want You [Girlfriend]") to raw and lascivious ("Grind with Me") to a combination of the two ("Playhouse," "Can't Live Without You"). Pretty Ricky effortlessly creates soulful music that defies any one time or genre on this impressive debut.

Pretty Ricky music CDs
$13.19 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly ...

| | Pitbull Money Is Still A Major Issue CD (2005) With DVD
Pretty Ricky album
$9.59 After growing up on a mix of traditional Cuban music and hardcore West Coast rap, Pitbull allows both sounds to influence his particular brand of crunk. Sprinkles of Miami's past also abound on the frenetic album, from the flared-out bass of "Get on the Floor" to "She's Freaky," which recalls the best of 2 Live Crew. The reigning King of Crunk, Lil Jon, supports on three tracks, including the Cuban drum-flecked, bilingual "Culo." That cut is reprised with a minimalist beat on the Miami remix, which is markedly more about the drum than the bass. The most prominent aspect of M.I.A.M.I., though, is its variety; Pitbull has embraced all sorts of sounds and styles, and the melange created makes for a singular experience, instead of just another crunk record.
Capping a stellar year of guest appearances and tours, the new album features remixes of hits from the M.I.A.M.I. album (DAMMIT MAN feat. LIL WAYNE & LIL FLIP; CULO feat. IVY QUEEN; TOMA remixes feat. BEENIE MAN, WAYNE WONDER, and more) plus songs he’s been featured on (SHE’S HOT by TOK, TURNIN ME ON by NINA SKYY and SHAKE with labelmates YING YANG TWINS). Also included on the album are unreleased songs with WYCLEF JEAN (JUNGLE FEVER) and PRETTY RICKY (EVERYBODY GET UP). A DVD component features videos of CULO, DAMMIT MAN and TOMA, plus a 20 minute look at Pitbull performing, behind the scenes and interview footage. This title carries a parental advisory.
Miami rapper Pitbull asserts that while crunk is most associated with the Atlanta, Georgia sound, the origin of the music is a few hundred miles ...

| | Bobby Sanabria & Quarteto Ache! CD (2002)
Pretty Ricky music CDs
$11.19 New York City-based drummer Bobby Sanabria might be considered the Buddy Rich of the Latin jazz percussive arena. He's a firebrand who lays down fervent swing grooves while churning out blazingly fast and amazingly coherent salsa beats amid an altogether complex attack. With this 2002 effort, the drummer leads his quartet through a sequence of torridly executed bop numbers and soul-stirring ballads via his polyrhythmic flurries and penchant for nuance. Saxophonist Jay Collins launches the proceedings with grit and determination on Dizzy Gillespie's bop classic "Shaw 'Nuff." Here and throughout, the band commingles inherent elements of clave with crisply executed time signatures and ferocious exchanges. Even when they explore balladry, the soloists seem more inclined to go for the gusto in lieu of settling for lush romanticism or saccharine statements. It all pans out rather nicely, as this release was among the finest Latin ...
