Audio Mixers: Hank Linderman; Timothy B. Schmit. Timothy B Schmit launched his solo career late - in 1984, after the Eagles disbanded and right in the thick of the era of shiny, synthesized production. Schmit released three solo albums, all big and glossy, between 1984 and 1991, then reunited with the Eagles in '94, so he never quite had a chance to record an album as relaxed and natural as 2009's EXPANDO. Ditching all the sheen, but not professional panache, that lingered all the way to 2001's FEED THE FIRE, Schmit returns to his country and folk-rock roots here, creating a record that has a clear through line from his early days with Poco, bears echoes of early Crosby Stills & Nash - a resemblance underscored by Graham Nash's occasional guest harmonies and the howling harmonica on "A Good Day" - and clearly is the work of the soft-rock songsmith behind "I Can't Tell You Why." As beguiling as this record sounds -- it's soft and warm without feeling slick, anchored in acoustic guitars and graced with sweet harmonies, peaking with the appearance of the Blind Boys of Alabama on "Secular Praise" -- what resonates is his strongest-ever collection of songs, songs that are tuneful, knowing, reflective, and occasionally funny, as on his tongue-and-cheek blues-rocker "White Boy from Sacramento," a showcase for his guitarist son Ben. This loud slice of satire is the exception to the rule on Expando, but this soft rock never feels lazy or complacent; it's rich and lived-in, a record that might have been a long time in coming but is certainly worth the wait. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Expando Music | List Price | $13.95 (You save $1.96) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs | | Label | Lost Highway | | Orig Year | 2009 | | All Time Sales Rank | 37034 | | CD Universe Part number | 8008029 | | Catalog number | 001349302 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Oct 20, 2009 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Timothy B. Timothy B Schmit Expando Songs Expando Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Terrific Music Wonderful music, different blends, great sounds Submitted by mkd (Anniston AL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Disappointed I am very disappointed with this CD. Timothy has a beautiful voice and can sing with so much soul - which is lacking in this CD. I was hoping for a lot more. Submitted by Donna (Jacksonville FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A triumph, at long last! “Expando” is the solo album Timothy B. Schmit fans have been waiting for since 1980. Finally, Schmit has fully tapped into his great talent and experience, to produce a consistent set of songs that are thought provoking and entertaining. This time out, Schmit took charge of the production duties, wrote all the songs himself and played most of the instruments as well. The production is warm, but not slick, and the songs are mature and personal.
Schmit shows his instrumental prowess, playing quite an array of instruments on the album, including bass, acoustic guitar, lead and rhythm electric guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, harmonica, electric piano, percussion and drums. For those vocal and instrumental parts he wanted some help with, he imagined the ideal collaborators and simply called them up and asked. Being very well-respected in the industry, Schmit’s offer was accepted by nearly everyone he called: Graham Nash, Kid Rock, Dwight Yoakam, Van Dyke Parks, Keb’ Mo’, Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, Garth Hudson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Gary Burton, Greg Leisz and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
It might be easy for such a project to turn into more of a showcase for the individuals involved than a cohesive artistic statement. However, Schmit was committed to serving the songs and successfully guided all that talent to produce a fine album that is at turns rootsy, charming, fun, introspective and sweet. And of course there is Schmit’s gorgeous, expressive high tenor voice, still in fine form. This is an album not just for fans of Schmit and his current and former bands (Eagles, Poco), but for fans of folk-rock, country-rock, singer-songwriters and old-fashioned professional singing and musicianship. Puts the ground beneath your feet... In classic Timothy style, listening to Expando is like have that talented friend at your bonfire. The whole cd feels personal. Warm and sentimental in all the right places and toe-tapping, smile-making fun in all the rest. Thanks Mr. Schmit for another favorite in our collection. | | Al Stewart First Album (Bed-Sitter Images) CD (2007) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Expando
$10.45 Personnel: Al Stewart (guitar). Bedsitter Images unveiled a promising but tentative folk-rock singer/songwriter. Al Stewart's songs already displayed his talent for observational storytelling, though at this point he was detailing ordinary lives of British people and autobiographical romance, rather than epic historical incidents. Most of the cuts used a full orchestra, and although the folk-baroque approach worked for some folk-rock artists of the era like Judy Collins, here it seemed ill-conceived. The orchestration ...
