Timothy B Schmit launched his solo career late - in 1984, after the Eagles disbanded and right in the thick of the era of shiny, synthesized production. Schmit released three solo albums, all big and glossy, between 1984 and 1991, then reunited with the Eagles in '94, so he never quite had a chance to record an album as relaxed and natural as 2009's EXPANDO. Ditching all the sheen, but not professional panache, that lingered all the way to 2001's FEED THE FIRE, Schmit returns to his country and folk-rock roots here, creating a record that has a clear through line from his early days with Poco, bears echoes of early Crosby Stills & Nash - a resemblance underscored by Graham Nash's occasional guest harmonies and the howling harmonica on "A Good Day" - and clearly is the work of the soft-rock songsmith behind "I Can't Tell You Why."

Audio Mixers: Hank Linderman; Timothy B. Schmit.

5 stars SURPRISED AND PLEASED...
LOVE IT!...WHEN I RECENTLY STUMBLED ACROSS THIS AT "CDU" I WAS SURPRISED AND VERY CURIOUS ABOUT TIMOTHY COMING OUT WITH HIS FIRST SOLO ALBUM. I'VE BEEN A FAN OF HIS FOR MANY YEARS GOING BACK TO "POCO"...AND OF COURSE HIS MANY YEARS WITH THE "EAGLES"...NOT TO MENTION OTHERS HE HAS WORKED WITH...HE'S A GREAT BASS PLAYER, ETC. AND I TRULY ENJOY HIS SOOTHING VOCAL ABILITIES...THIS IS NOT REALLY A ROCKIN' AND ROLLING DOWN THE HIGHWAY TYPE ALBUM, ALTHOUGH IT DEFINITELY HAS 'GOOD LICKS' THROUGHOUT, IT IS MORE OF A, LIKE ONE OF HIS SONGS, 'NEED SOME DOWN TIME', KICK-BACK AND ENJOY TYPE ALBUM...IT'S DIFFERENT, FRESH, FEEL-GOOD, WONDERFUL MUSIC, GREAT BEATS AND RYTHUMS, WITH GOOD DOWN-HOME LYRICS.. I AM SO VERY GLAD THAT I ADDED THIS ALBUM TO MY COLLECTION!!!

2 stars Disappointed
I am very disappointed with this CD. Timothy has a beautiful voice and can sing with so much soul - which is lacking in this CD. I was hoping for a lot more.

5 stars A triumph, at long last!
“Expando” is the solo album Timothy B. Schmit fans have been waiting for since 1980. Finally, Schmit has fully tapped into his great talent and experience, to produce a consistent set of songs that are thought provoking and entertaining. This time out, Schmit took charge of the production duties, wrote all the songs himself and played most of the instruments as well. The production is warm, but not slick, and the songs are mature and personal. Schmit shows his instrumental prowess, playing quite an array of instruments on the album, including bass, acoustic guitar, lead and rhythm electric guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, harmonica, electric piano, percussion and drums. For those vocal and instrumental parts he wanted some help with, he imagined the ideal collaborators and simply called them up and asked. Being very well-respected in the industry, Schmit’s offer was accepted by nearly everyone he called: Graham Nash, Kid Rock, Dwight Yoakam, Van Dyke Parks, Keb’ Mo’, Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, Garth Hudson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Gary Burton, Greg Leisz and the Blind Boys of Alabama. It might be easy for such a project to turn into more of a showcase for the individuals involved than a cohesive artistic statement. However, Schmit was committed to serving the songs and successfully guided all that talent to produce a fine album that is at turns rootsy, charming, fun, introspective and sweet. And of course there is Schmit’s gorgeous, expressive high tenor voice, still in fine form. This is an album not just for fans of Schmit and his current and former bands (Eagles, Poco), but for fans of folk-rock, country-rock, singer-songwriters and old-fashioned professional singing and musicianship.

5 stars Puts the ground beneath your feet...
In classic Timothy style, listening to Expando is like have that talented friend at your bonfire. The whole cd feels personal. Warm and sentimental in all the right places and toe-tapping, smile-making fun in all the rest. Thanks Mr. Schmit for another favorite in our collection.

Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents. The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Almost a missing mid-period Floyd album, this solo effort is a must-have for all Pink Floyd ...

Kristina Train was born in New York City but grew up singing in church choirs in Savannah, GA, home to many great soul and pop singers over the years. Train sang in soul bands while still a teenager and got a development deal with Blue Note when she was 19. Seven years later she went to London to cut Spilt Milk with producer and songwriter Jimmy Hogarth, and songwriter arranger Eg White. Train, Hogarth, and White wrote most of the tunes here, and they're all solid, with half of them sounding like potential anthems. The album opens with the title track, possibly the collection's strongest song and certainly the catchiest. The tune opens with a subtle piano figure and Train's whispered vocal, full of jazzy inflections, then the chorus kicks in with Train belting out the hook line with a soulful, tear-stained power. It's the kind of tune that will have you pushing the replay button over and over. "Don't Beg for Love" is another sizzler, a quiet tour de force with hints of Aretha and Dusty Springfield in the vocal, and that's not critical hyperbole. Train's ...
