A three-CD set also available as three double vinyl albums in a fancy box, Sadly, the Future Is No Longer What It Was is the latest work from James Leyland Kirby, a Berlin-based British composer and producer who also records more traditional, dancefloor-oriented material as a member of the V/Vm duo, and ambient music as the Caretaker. In the latter guise, he's been regarded as one of the crucial figures in an artistic movement dubbed "hauntology," in which sounds are distressed and covered in fuzz and distortion -- the audio equivalent of dust, as though the music is decaying away and/or manifesting itself more as memory than as present-day audio.
