GOTHIKA stars Halle Berry as Dr. Miranda Grey, a psychiatrist who becomes a patient in her own mental hospital after she is accused of murdering her husband (Charles S. Dutton). Grey's only initial memory of the incident involves a chilling encounter with a distraught girl (Kathleen Mackey) on a rain-soaked road. The incarcerated and medicated Grey is now haunted by the same apparition, and she must convince her former colleague Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr.) that she is not insane or guilty of murder. Meanwhile, the seemingly mad ramblings of Chloe (Penelope Cruz), one of Grey's former patients, now make more sense, and Grey must throw aside clinical logic to solve the supernatural murder mystery. Kassovitz, who is already a capable actor (AMELIE) and director (CRIMSON RIVERS), makes the leap to Hollywood filmmaking with GOTHIKA. Drawing from heavily from the Japanese horror renaissance that began with RINGU in the late 1990s, Kassovitz conjures up a forebodingly stark and shadowy tale. Berry continues her remarkable string of success (after her Oscar-winning role in MONSTER'S BALL, along with DIE ANOTHER DAY and X-MEN 2), portraying Grey as a traumatized and vulnerable yet determined woman who must unravel the brutal and bizarre knot of her own lost memory. As Grey's coworker, Downey Jr. adds an intriguing element to the film, and Cruz, as a frustrated inmate, gives an unusual quirky performance. A scare-laden thriller that delights in the strange and the frightening, GOTHIKA proves to be one of the finest of 2003's many horror films.

Theatrical Release Date: November 21, 2003

Gothika Reviews:

"...Berry takes on the plump genre role with tense earnestness. And she's met head-on by Robert Downey Jr...." -- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"The casting of Halle Berry is useful to the movie, because she evokes a vulnerable quality that triggers our concern."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

4 stars A dazzlingly intriguing psychological thriller...
In today's lightning fast society with today's ever increasing skeptical audiences, smart movies like "Gothika" are becoming a dying breed. Halle Berry's portrayal of a clinical psychologist who becomes a patient in her own hospital is nothing short of stunning. Visual and mechanical effects are top-notch, and the crash sequence at the bridge that launches the movie's second act was both visually arresting and terrifying. The movie's third act, featuring the largely unappreciated John Carroll Lynch as the town Sheriff, includes a climax that is both completely unexpected and, again, visually spectacular. And since this movie is no longer available on HD DVD (RIP), the Blu-ray release should feature the same amazing 1080i video transfer with Dolby TrueHD audio. (When will Warner join Fox & Universal and put DTS Master Audio on all Blu-ray releases? All this hype about how great Blu-ray is because it can hold so much more content, and yet Warner puts the same features on Blu-ray, which has more disc space, as on HD DVD, the video of which looks better)

Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse. Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humor to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film. Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley star in this action adventure. The 2-disc DVD set features deleted scenes, outtakes and audio commentary with Johnny Depp.

Haunted prisons are rarely an ideal place to spend the night. But these documentary filmmakers ignore conventional wisdom to make their movie. A group of criminals choose that night to use the prison as a haven from the law, but it's the ghosts of the inmates that are the most deadly. Known for playing unhinged characters in films like THE FRIGHTENERS, Jake Busey stars in this creepy horror film with veteran actors Stacy Keach and Danny Trejo. Deep within the decaying catacombs of the Isla del Roca Penitentiary lies a haunting history of epic proportions. The prison now serves as a shattered relic of archaic brutality after a deadly riot forced the state to close its doors. A group of filmmakers descend upon the abandoned prison to begin production on a documentary, only to find that a band of violent fugitives has taken refuge inside the empty jailhouse. However the victims of that fatal riot may still walk the prison corridors. Soon it's not clear who is more dangerous: the living criminals...or the dead ones. Kevin Vanhook directs. Jack Busey, Stacy Keach, and Kyle Schmid star.

Daniel Miller's got it all--great friends, a terrific job, and a brand-new BMW--that is, until he crashes the car into a bus as soon as he drives it off the lot. Daniel finds himself in Judgment City in the afterlife, where the newly dead have five days to defend the way they lived their lives in order to be allowed to move onward instead of going back to earth to live another one. As Daniel reviews his less-than-courageous life, he also enjoys the perks of Judgment City--the Past Lives Pavilion, all the food you can eat without any risk of weight gain--and Julia, the woman he's waited all his life to find. But if he can't prove his life wasn't governed by fear, Daniel has to go back--and Julia seems a shoo-in to move onward. This highly original, touching comedy stars Albert Brooks as Daniel Miller and Meryl Streep as Julia, with hilarious supporting performances by Rip Torn as Daniel's defender, Lee Grant as his prosecutor, and Buck Henry as a taciturn substitute lawyer. 112 minute feature film DVD starring Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep. Take a trip to the afterlife in this hilarious story of what happens after you die.
