Considered by many fans to be the German duo's first classic album, 1975's RADIO-ACTIVITY marked a major change of persona for Kraftwerk. Radio-Aktivitat CD music Cutting their hair, shaving their beards and dressing in plain suits, Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider reinvented themselves as ascetic sound engineers as opposed to performers. Defining An Era
I've always found this album strangely cold, yet warm. It starts out literally as a geiger counter, and the very austere title track ensues, followed by a gentle lullabye of sorts;"Radioland" - metronoming you into hypnosis, then waking you up with a snappy number("Airwaves") that ends with station identification, and very bass heavy newscasts looped over on another. At this point, in the days of vinyl, side one ended... Onto the robotic voice introduction that hums and whirs it's way into "Antennae" which is a gentle rocking melodie similar to "Autobahn" - with nice reverb on the vocals. It's back to beeps and whirs after this song, and the nice thing about this album is the analog sound, like science fiction noises from the fifties, and that wondrous quality of purity in Kraftwerks music comes through with the simplest of arrangements, on "Uranium" the album reminds you of the underlying menace in the overall theme, and even in the previous track"Radio Stars" the cold is sort of blowing in on the warmth of the analog synths. Then, a short interlude that sounds like a loop for beginning and ending radio programs with, and "Ohm Sweet Ohm", the last track conjuring up images of happy families sitting around the fire listening to the radio. The overall feel of this album is somewhat anachronistic, yet futuristic, and it marks the end of what could be called the old Kraftwerk sound, for the next album (after Radioactivity) - Trans Europe Express, took them onto the dance floor, and into their place in musical history books. Radioactivity serves as part three of the Trilogy that comprises Kraftwerks first three albums, when they were more on the art-rock side of electronic music, which was soon to become dance music... as they were quick to manifest...

The beginnings of quality electronic music
Made in 1975 so even by Kraftwerk's standards this is very primitive sounding due to the fact that electronic equipment like keyboards and synths were only starting to be developed. Nevertheless this is an album full of sweet melodies and clicking electronic drums and percussion. It has a darker feel than later albums, partly due to the albums subject matter, the threat of Radiation. Some songs are very experimental but mostly they are very melodic and highly enjoyable tracks like 'Antenna' with its early bassline being a highlight and the dual language vocal on title track 'Radioactivity'. Not advisable for an introduction to Kraftwerk, purchase 'Computer World' or 'Man Machine' first to get used to their sound.

Milestone for electronic music fans
This work, released in 1975, is a memorable example of electronic and conceptual music. With the available resources, the final achievement is admirable, with clean, well mixed sound effects. It is another milestone in the series of Kraftwerk's albums inspired in aspects of the modern, technical-influenced era, as Computerworld and The Man-machine. So, technology becomes the man's master and servant at a time, an idea that can be prophetical in the nearest future.
