Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work. Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD carried the torch for pure thrash.
There will no doubt be a lot of hoopla concerning the name Slayer have chosen for World Painted Blood. In many ways, it could have been called Reign in Blood Revisited. But the word "revisited " is the key. Some compositions on this new recording have more of the band's early-style melody in them, with lightning flare-up riffs between verses; quick, unexpected guitar pyrotechnics; and blastbeat power drumming from Dave Lombardo (the band's original drummer who returned to the lineup for 2006's Christ Illusion) pushing it all into the red. But there are mannerisms and strategies from the band's later albums at work as well -- even if they are unconsciously employed. Christ Illusion reached deep into Slayer's old bag of tricks to reorient themselves to more speed-based playing after the midtempo records of the late '90s, and there was a fantastic concentration on riffs and call and response between the guitars and rhythm section. On World Painted Blood the focus is more on songs, and therefore the return of the "melodic" aspect of the band's past -- and let's face it, during the classic years Slayer were peerless in that department. The riffs make sense in the context of Tom Araya's sung verses, and so do the considerable beats. Check the opener with its intricate instrumental intro bracing the listener for the eruption of power that follows -- Araya's spoken word interludes notwithstanding. "Americon" combines wah-wah riff heaviness with thundercrack drumming and Araya's downtuned bassline. Check the speed and intense guitar exchanges in "Public Display of Dismemberment" and "Psychopathy Red" for the best evidence of Slayer at their most powerful on this set. Despite great songs and great playing, there are more midtempo tracks here than on Christ Illusion, and Greg Fidelman's production style takes a different tack altogether for this guitar-manic crew. Lombardo's drums are WAAAAAAAY up in the mix, as are Araya's vocals -- you can understand every word, even on the thrashers; the guitars are simply further down in the mix and sometimes it becomes difficult to discern Araya's bass. Therefore, the first listen or two to World Painted Blood might be a bit confusing for the seasoned Slayer fan, but that changes quickly, and the sound of those drums blasting in one's head will become a more than welcome presence in the mix. [There are two other editions of World Painted Blood: the Deluxe Edition comes with a bonus DVD containing a thematic narrative (and disturbing) animated video, and the other one is on vinyl with a copy of the CD enclosed in the sleeve.] ~ Thom Jurek

Alternative Press (p.117) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "WORLD PAINTED BLOOD is the most raw and punked-up Slayer album this decade, and a vital addition to the band's catalog."

5 stars Better than their past three albums
I know people consider "Christ Illusion" to be a good comeback album for these guys but I didn't care for it. Sure, it was better than God Hates Us All but it wasn't THAT great. This album, however, improves upon Christ Illusion by 20. Lots of Melody, anger and Henneman composed songs (Finally!!!) Araya's vocals sound better than they have the past few years, he sounds angry and or/evil in most songs. Although he is pretty annoying on a few. Slayer tries a few new things here, or atl east brings back things they haven't done in a while. *Such as singing on the track "Playing With Dolls"* The solos are still crappy but you expect them not to be? This is Slayer we are talking about. Other than that the members are the best they can possibly get at this point. Great album.

5 stars A return to the classic sound
I really like this release. The 2nd in a row with original drummer Dave Lombardo. This is more of consistant sound in the classic Slayer style. Gone are the nu-metal moments of Diabolous and God Hates Us All. Jackhammer riffs, many played fast and furious with Tom Araya's trademark vocals. With Slayer's view on religion, current events, murder and of course, SATAN. Hanneman and King play chunky fast and furious riffs with intricate screaming solos. I think it is their best in years....But don't get me wrong, I loved Christ Illusion and the releases during the Paul Bostaph years, but Dave brings back the classic skin pounding. A not to Columbia/American;If masters of Divine Intervention with Dave Lombardo exist, and I suspect they do, please release them. The eve that comes in this "deluxe" package is bizarre, but entertaining.

This album reissue includes a new song and alternate version plus a DVD with nearly 15 minutes of special live and tour footage plus a music video. This album was Slayer's first in 15 years featuring the original line-up, as drummer Dave Lombardo returns to the fold. Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass guitar); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums).
2006's CHRIST ILLUSION marks a return to form for one of the fiercest and most influential metal bands in history. Slayer's original lineup reconvened in the studio for the first time since 1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS for CHRIST ILLUSION, and the results recall the classic sound of landmark thrash releases like 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD. Time hasn't dulled the band's terrifying intensity one iota; if anything, Slayer's sound crackles with renewed attack.
The breathtaking double-time drums, grinding guitar riff, and throat-shredding vocals on the opener, "Flesh Storm," signal the relentless sonic onslaught in store for the listener. Lyrically, too, Slayer is in fine form, exploring in typically dark fashion the pitfalls of religion, orthodoxy, and--with timely references to unrest in the Middle East--the ideology of war. But it's the band's musical chops ...

The modern barbarians of Amon Amarth are dedicated to mining their native Sweden's Viking past for tales of battle glory and eternal feasting that they can build into their colossally melodic death metal. Their seventh album, TWILIGHT OF THE THUNDER GOD, makes plain its mission from the album cover, featuring the Mighty Thor wielding his mystic hammer against a giant dragon. The music itself bludgeons the listener just like that warhammer, with sturdy songs like "Guardians of Asgaard" pounding out a brutal mid-tempo beat, and "Twilight of the Thunder God" spinning a power-metal influenced web of twisting guitars and jackhammer drums.
If extreme metal existed back in the days of Vikings, Sweden's Amon Amarth would undoubtedly be the musical choice of vessels ...
