The title might sound like hyperbole, but this two-disc collection is, in fact, a pretty fair summation of Michael Jackson's career up to 2005. Of course, it's impossible for two discs to hold every hit single Michael Jackson has ever had, but THE ESSENTIAL MICHAEL JACKSON starts with the Jackson Five's debut single, "I Want You Back," and ends 38 tracks later with the 2001 comeback attempt "You Rock My World." In between is a chronological overview of some of the most significant pop music in the last three decades of the 20th century, climaxing with about two-thirds of THRILLER and half of OFF THE WALL, the album that in retrospect sounds even fresher and more exciting than its blockbuster follow-up. Disc Two starts in 1987 with eight tracks from the underrated BAD, and its second half does the listener the handy service of compressing the second act of Michael Jackson's life story (a time when the tabloid headlines were overshadowing his increasingly formulaic music) into nine entirely respectable, if not earth-shattering, singles.

Unlike many British soul acts who tend to serve their music up with a polite, retro presentation, Mark Morrison's RETURN OF THE MACK squares itself in the present alongside peers like R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige. This is a spicy blend of contemporary R&B soaked in hip-hop and dancehall flavors . Various suggestive shades of sexuality provide the flow, from the Blackstreet-flavored new-jack posturing of "Let's Get Down" to the more blatant "Horny," an electro-funk excursion that mixes in elements of Rick James, the Gap Band and Cameo's Larry Blackmon.

This 2000 greatest hits set is by no means a definitive compilation. Greatest Hits: The Encore Collection has a scant ten tracks and runs 35-plus minutes. This set, like the previous ones, collects work from two distinctly different versions of the group. With first lead singer Donald McPherson, the group fashioned sad ballads due to McPherson's light tenor. Tracks like "You've Been My Inspiration" and "Spinning Around" typify the skilled though depressing ballads they proffered at the time. This set also includes the almost forgotten track "The Girl I Left Behind." With McPherson's death, the Main Ingredient signed up a new lead singer, the charismatic Cuba Gooding. This CD features the big hits of Martinho da Vila in a live recording commemorating 30 years of his career, including his own compositions like "Segure Tudo" and "Casa de Bamba." The irreproachable malandro carioca also presents precious jewels of the bambas of the hills (such as Joao da Baiana, Donga, Pixinguinha, and Silas de Oliveira), including "Pelo Telefone" (the first recorded samba), "Batuque Na Cozinha," and others.
