Thelonious Monk - American Composer Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Prophet and Poet Even among jazz musicians, a notoriously eclectic and eccentric bunch, Thelonious Monk stood out as a cat of a completely different stripe. Monk wasn’t just a visionary—he was a bold insurrectionist who helped pioneer bebop and wrote numerous jazz standards to boot. Monk’s complex, evocative tunes were full of surprising twists and turns, and his piano solos were noted for their percussive force and controlled dissonance. He simply heard, wrote and played music differently from anyone before or since. Yet as challenging as his music could be, it was also imbued with an otherworldly beauty few other jazz composers have approached. Most importantly, Monk never sold himself or his music short, even at the cost of commercial success. The essence of the man and his art is admirably captured in this “Masters of American Music” documentary. Originally part of a television mini-series that aired in the late 1980s/early 1990s and which previously appeared on VHS, it has now been remastered, repackaged and released on DVD by the good folks at Naxos, who also put out the essential Jazz Icons DVD series. The film features plenty of performance and behind-the scenes footage; a wealth of archival stills; and interviews with musicians Randy Weston, Billy Taylor and Thelonious Monk III (plus record producer Orrin Keepnews), who provide additional context and emotional resonance. The disc times out at 59 minutes, which is just long enough to paint a compelling portrait in images and music, but not too long to wear out its welcome. Even those who own the more comprehensive documentary “Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser” will find this to be a worthy companion disc.

Thelonious Monk - American Composer film
$12.05 When one applies for a job, sometimes the response is that you're overqualified. The same may be the case for Peisha McPhee. Her classically trained, strong, clear voice of operatic proportions doesn't always fit well with the songs on the play list, songs that require somewhat more vocal dynamics than McPhee gives. Trying hard as she can to restrain her powerful voice, she comes on too strong for such pop material as "Ill Wind" and "Little Girl Blue," which require greater subtlety than McPhee provides. At the same time, her voice and demeanor go well with songs that have a strong emotional tug, such as "Who Can I Turn To?" There's also a cleverly contrived dubbed a cappella duet on "Isn't It Romantic." But her forte is in the Gershwin material. "The Man I Love" and the Gershwin medley require the dramatic reading that a formidable voice like McPhee's can give them. Her sole accompaniment for this session is pianist, composer, and voice teacherMel Dangcil. Usually the concern is that the piano player may overwhelm the singer. Not the case here. Dangcil has to work hard not be swamped by the strong voice of McPhee. The result is that matters sometimes get a bit busy. McPhee needs more than just a piano to provide an adequate framework for her exceptional voice. For the pure pleasure of hearing a lovely voice, this album is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan
Ms.McPhee is an extra ordinary talent. She brings passion to many of the songs, especially Harold Arlen's Ill Wind - and I most enjoyed her a cappella rendition of Rodgers and Hart's Isn't It Romantic. We discover a lonely woman remembering her lost childhood as she sings the Rodgers and Hart standard Little Girl Blue. She hopelessly tries to face her demons with the Arlen/Koehler lament Ill Wind. Sunlight ...
