Recorded live in Paris, France and Toronto, Canada in 1976-1977.
By the time the Rolling Stones got around to issuing the third live album of their career, 1977's LOVE YOU LIVE, the legendary band had reinvented itself from a dangerous and sleazy rock & roll group to a more polished arena rock outfit. That said, the group was going through one of the rockiest and most uncertain periods of its lengthy career; Keith Richards had just been busted for heroin possession in Canada with the threat of a long prison sentence hanging over his head, new member Ron Wood was still finding his niche in the band, and Mick Jagger appeared more concerned with jet-setting.
So it's a pretty impressive accomplishment that the Stones could present such a fun and spirited performance as the one featured on LOVE YOU LIVE (taped at a rare club appearance at Toronto's famed El Macombo). Though not exactly in league with one of rock's all-time great live sets, 1969's GET YER YA YA'S OUT, LOVE YOU LIVE contains many highlights, such as the funky "Hot Stuff," the Richards-sung "Happy," several blues covers that kick off disc two ("Mannish Boy," Chuck Berry's "Around and Around," etc.) and an awesome, album-closing triple punch of "Brown Sugar," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Sympathy for the Devil."

| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Love You Live CD music
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her adventures, bringing an important change of pace to that popular band's hits. The jacket looks like a dusty old family album-style book holding ...
| | Walker Brothers Ultimate Collection CD (2008)
Love You Live music CDs
$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting ...

Love You Live songs
$8.90 Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios).
Prior to the release of 1989's STEEL WHEELS, most rock fans figured that there was a better chance of spotting the Loch Ness Monster than catching the Stones in concert again. Band founders Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were waging a bitter verbal battle in the press (and issuing solo albums), while longtime fans criticized the Stones' last few unfocused studio efforts. It appeared like the band was done for, until Jagger and Richards reconciled and reunited the other boys in the band for their first U.S. tour in nearly eight years. The tour was one of the most successful ever undertaken by a rock band, as all the mammoth shows were instant sell-outs, including selections from all eras of the band's vast catalogue. It's ...
