For 2007's AMERICAN DOLL POSSE, singer-songwriter Tori Amos returns to more confrontational form, after her relatively subdued and introspective '05 outing, THE BEEKEEPER. While that album may have been informed by the warm, nurturing side of motherhood, POSSE seems to plant its feet on the fierce, protective side of raising a child, with Amos referring to various social and political issues even in the record's title, which nods to the wildly popular American Girl series of collectable dolls and gives the bold performer yet another reason to play dress-up.
In keeping with the various personas depicted on POSSE's cover, Amos has kept the album appropriately eclectic, with the upbeat, keyboard-driven "Bouncing Off Clouds" and buoyant "Secret Spell" playing off moody songs such as "Teenage Hustling," which breaks into a startling guitar-heavy swagger as it comments on despondent youth. The 10th studio album from premiere piano-pop chanteuse Tori Amos offers a return to the singles-oriented approach of classic Amos albums like UNDER THE PINK. This isn't to say that ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN is filled with radio-tailored pop--not by a long shot. The tunes still pack plenty of Amos's unique, off-kilter sensibility, which revels in eerie strangeness as much as accessible melody. Yet ABNORMALLY takes a step down from the elaborate conceptual conceits of predecessors like 2007's AMERICAN DOLL POSSE, putting the emphasis back on the individual songs.
The songs weave Amos's signature lyrical finesse (which often delves into intimate or uncomfortable themes) with equally spellbinding melodies and arrangements (which emphasize subtle electronics and pulsing rhythms). The lead-off single, "Welcome to England," rolls gently toward an indelible melodic hook, while album opener "Give" creeps along a minor scale to a head-nodding rhythm. Amos experiments with country, cabaret, ambient music, and trip-hop, while exploring lyrical themes that include religion, death, and, of course, love, imbuing each song with a peculiar intensity. Guitar Wolf returns with UFO Romantics, another collection of their speaker-igniting garage/punk/shockabilly insanity. As with their previous work, this album features fantastically titled workouts like "After School Thunder" and "Fire Ball Red," both of which feature pummeling riffs and throat-shredding vocals courtesy of guitar wolf Seiji; and several songs move along at a breathless clip, particularly the fast-and-loud homage to "Taxi Driver," which borders on hardcore, but many of UFO Romantics best moments come when the band slows down and develops a groove instead of driving their songs into the ground.
