For their ninth album, Procol Harum turned to production by the veteran songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller, who had written the first single ("Poison Ivy") by Procol predecessor band, the Paramounts. Though the band is in top form (especially drummer B.J. Wilson) and despite a strong start (with the exquisite "Pandora's Box," a U.K. hit), the album largely runs out of steam by side two. Too much of the Brooker and Reid material is competent rather than exciting. Likewise, Procol fails to render memorable versions of two cover songs, Leiber and Stoller's "I Keep Forgetting" or the Beatles' "Eight Days A Week." Most of this album's best material can be found on the Chrysalis Years collection. [Grand Hotel and Procol's Ninth were later re-released as Cornerstone, a budget double album.] ~ James A. Gardner

2009 remaster of their ninth album from 1975. Includes the 3 bonus tracks 'Unquiet Zone' (Raw track), 'Taking The Time', (Raw track), and 'Fool's Gold' (Raw track with guide vocal). Includes updated packaging with a deluxe 24 page booklet with extensive liner notes & contributions from band members. 13 tracks

Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD  (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak

Procol's Ninth album
CD $19.79  5 stars
The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance ...

2009 remaster of their tenth and final album from 1977. Includes the 3 bonus tracks 'Backgammon', 'This Old Dog', and 'You'd Better Wait'. Includes updated packaging with a deluxe 20 page booklet that has rare unseen photos & memorabilia as well as extensive sleeve notes. Even fans call this one "Something Tragic." There are still hints of the tight ensemble playing that characterizes the best of Procol's Chrysalis albums, but most of the first side is dreary, uninspired stuff. While the title track captures some of the drama of early Procol, Brooker's distinctive voice is the sole link to their former glory on indifferent cuts like "Wizard Man." ("Strangers in Space" later appeared on the Brooker-produced The Long Good-bye: The Symphonic Music of Procol Harum.) "The Worm & The Tree" is a side-long extravagance, the first time the band had produced a work of this length ...
