1980's FREEDOM OF CHOICE proved to be Devo's big commercial breakthrough. Due to its massive hit single "Whip It" (one of the most memorable and original singles of the year) and a more refined sound, FREEDOM OF CHOICE is Devo's most popular album, easily on par with their classic '78 debut. Along with albums by Blondie, The Cars, The B-52's, and Talking Heads, FREEDOM was one of the first new wave records to break into the mainstream, helping to pave the way for the success of "alternative rock."
Although "Whip It" has been played to death over the years (it's turned up in countless movies and '80s compilations), its sly lyrics, stiff-yet-catchy synthesizer breaks, and hilarious accompanying video still hold up. Also included on FREEDOM are many tracks just as strong as "Whip It"--the defiant title track and the jerky "Girl U Want" are excellent, and deserved to be hits as well (the latter has been covered by both Soundgarden and Robert Palmer). Other highlights abound ("Snowball," "Gates of Steel," "Planet Earth," etc.), making FREEDOM OF CHOICE Devo's third classic album in a row.

This remaster is so much better than the original. The album now sounds on par with the Infinite Zero albums that Henry Rollins released years ago. While Freedom of Choice is not one of my most favorite DEVO albums (Those being Duty Now For The Future, and New Traditionalists), it is still a very enjoyable album. It does however bear the distinction of having my most favorite DEVO song of all time on it, Gates of Steel, which sounds fantastic on this new remaster! Standout tracks here are, Gates of Steel, Girl U Want, Snowball, Freedom of Choice, Planet Earth, and of course Whip It. It took Warner Bros. long enough, but, DEVO Freedom of Choice finally got remastered!

PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).

Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968.
One of the Who's classics, THE WHO SELL-OUT found the band following the Beatles' lead into concept territory while slyly commenting on the new direction as overtly commercial via its title, its cover art, and the inclusion of many fake advertisements between its tracks. Ironically, the group were involved with real advertisements--some of which are included in this box--at the time of the SELL-OUT sessions. The album has held up over the years--certainly meriting mention with other behemoths of British concept psych like SGT. PEPPER'S, DISRAELI GEARS, and THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN. The record consistently finds footing in the upper reaches of critical all-time best lists.
Geffen reissued the album in 2009 as 55-song box set featuring the complete sequenced album in stereo and mono mixes and two discs worth of album-related odds and sods--many of them previously unreleased. "Odorono" appears with its final chorus intact as do an excellent take on Eddie Cochrane's "Summertime Blues" and many versions of "Rael," Pete Townshend's first stab at full-blown rock opera. The set also features a 28-page booklet with liner notes by Dave Marsh and Andy Neill and a poster first included in the album's original pressing.

Neil Young's second album yielded several of his most enduring hits (including the title tune, "Cowgirl In The Sand," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Down By The River") and firmly established him as a solo artist of the first rank. Though it's impossible to narrow the catalog of Young and Crazy Horse down to one representative document, this is about as close as you're likely to get. This was Young's first collaboration with the Horse, and it's still one of that group's defining recorded moments. As in much of Young's subsequent work, the feeling of despair moves unabated through the album, which runs the emotional gamut from laconically desperate to psychotically desperate. Despite the gloom, the heavy electric riffing on "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl In the Sand"--two surrealistic odes to an idealized muse--is cathartic and invigorating, easily as riveting as the guitar onslaught of anyone from the Stooges to the Velvet Underground.
