Personnel: Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer (vocals, guitar); Eric Singer (vocals, drums); Gene Simmons (vocals). Audio Mixer: Greg Collins . Photographers: Neil Zlozower; Dean Snowden. When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ROCK & ROLL OVER/LOVE GUN-esque tracks such as the Gene Simmons-sung rockers "Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" and "Russian Roulette," sit ambitious pieces such as "Stand," which employs a Motown-influenced chorus melody, sophisticated arrangement, and Beach Boys-style harmonies, and "All For the Glory" and "Lightning Strikes," which are vocal showcases from new guys Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer (respectively). Interestingly, both Singer's rasp and Thayer's slightly off-kilter delivery are highly reminiscent of their famous predecessors, which further contributes to the album's distinct Kiss-ness. Overall, though the record doesn't pack quite the same lean, mean, gritty punch as early classics like DESTROYER or KISS (or Ace Frehley's own 2009 album ANOMALY), it is a clear return to the sound of archetypal Kiss.Entertainment Weekly (p.100) - "There's no denying the pleasingly hook-laden nature of such anthemic rockers as BOOM's 'Stand' and "Modern Day Delilah'..." -- Grade: B Sonic Boom Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Something really worth to have This is a super CD which I'm enjoying a lot. KISS IS BACK! Well there isn't a day goes by that I don't listen to sonic boom. Kiss did an awsome job on this. No way in hell is KISS dead! SHOUT IT OUT LOUD! Submitted by jeffberndt (Litchfield Mn) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Back to their roots... It's obvious that new guitarist Thayer was raised on Ace's playing style, and I wouldn't be embarassed to put this right next to Creatures or Roll Over. All for the Glory may be the weakest song, until you get to the bonus material anyways. The re-done classics are hit (I Love it Loud) and miss (Shout it Out Loud), and the DVD is worthless. But in all it's more than worth the 12 bucks I forked over for it. Submitted by Billster (Memphrika, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sonic Boom
$23.75 Kaleidoscope World is the Chills' essential document, a collection of tracks from early and mid-'80s EPs, singles, and compilation cuts. The influence of Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd is stronger on these early tracks than it would be on subsequent releases, both on the easygoing sing along numbers and the more experimental outings. The highlight (of both the album and the Chills' career) is their New Zealand hit single, the haunting 'Pink Frost'.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12" KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost." Kaleidoscope World is the Chills' essential document, although it's not an album but a collection of ...
| | Wire Pink Flag CD (1977) Remastered; Digipak
Sonic Boom
$11.99 Wire: Colin Newman (vocals, guitar); Graham Lewis (vocals, bass); B.C. Gilbert (guitar); Robert Gotobed (drums). Additional personnel: Kate Lukas (flute); Dave Oberle (background vocals). Perhaps the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk, Wire's Pink Flag plays like The Ramones Go to Art School -- song after song careens past in a glorious, stripped-down rush. However, unlike the Ramones, Wire ultimately made their mark through unpredictability. Very few of the songs followed traditional verse/chorus structures -- if one or two riffs sufficed, no more were added; if a musical hook or lyric didn't need to be repeated, Wire immediately stopped playing, accounting for the album's brevity (21 songs in under 36 minutes on the original version). ...
| | Horrors Strange House CD (2007) Enhanced CD
Sonic Boom
$9.99 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Horrors (UK): Faris Rotter (vocals); Joshua Von Grimm (guitar). On their singles and EPs, the Horrors proved they'd done their post-punk and freakbeat homework. With their debut album, Strange House, they push their sound forward, distill it to its rawest essence, and give it a few funhouse mirror twists and turns for good measure. Almost half of the songs on the album already appeared on previous Horrors releases, but the ever-so-slightly cleaner production here gives more definition to their black-on-black sound. The band kicks off Strange House by revisiting their cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's "Jack the Ripper," which begins at a zombie-slow pace, then suddenly speeds up halfway through, transforming into a hurtling roller ...

| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (2008) (Import) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak; Germany
Sonic Boom
$18.75 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially ...
