Guitarist Ry Cooder assembled the aging singers and musicians for a series of recording sessions. The resulting 1997 album won a Grammy. The music performances are intercut with shots of the performers reminiscing in decaying Havana bars. Each feels trapped in a bleak life, and attempts to find some kind of escape with the other.
Leila is a sexually voracious young woman who connects with men through sex. One night at a party, she meets David. Later, as she has casual sex with a stranger outside, David and his girlfriend mirror her actions in their car. Their eyes lock, beginning a courtship ritual that initiates their own actual affair. Stars Lauren Lee Smith, Eric Balfour.

Buena Vista Social Club movie DVD
$5.49 Based on the autobiographical short story by Truman Capote (IN COLD BLOOD), this inspirational drama tells the story of Buddy, a seven-year-old boy abandoned by his parents and living with his spinster cousins in the rural South. The film is set during the Christmas season, and presents a tender look at Buddy's close and loving relationships with his far older relatives, Sook (Patty Duke) and Jennie (Piper Laurie).
When Buddy (Eric Lloyd), is abandoned by his parents at the age of 7, he is dumped in the south at the small-town home of some older unmarried cousins. Without friends of his own age, Buddy develops a close friendship with one of the older, simpler ladies, Sook (Patty Duke) and the 2 undertake many adventures together. At Christmas time, they bake 31 fruit-cakes which they give as Christmas present, even mailing them to President Roosevelt and Jean Harlowe! Although Buddy is eventually urged to move on with his life by his insistent cousin Jennie (Piper Laurie), the memories of his friendship with Sook stay with him forever. This story is based on the original novel by Truman Capote.

$10.99 For his fourth directorial feature in the span of two years, Clint Eastwood tells the story of a grizzled Korean War vet's reluctant friendship with a Hmong teenage boy and his immigrant family. Set in contemporary Detroit, GRAN TORINO tackles the shifting cultural and economic landscape of not only the Motor City, but America as well. Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski, an unabashed bigot who never heard a racial insult he didn't love. Bitter, haunted, and full of pride, Walt refuses to abandon the neighborhood he's lived in for decades despite its changing demographics as he clings desperately to a mindset long since out of step with the times. When his Hmong neighbor Thao tries to steal his prized muscle car as part of a gang initiation, Walt is forced to grapple with the world around him.
GRAN TORINO's approach to the complicated issue of race relations is equal parts Archie Bunker and CRASH. That is to say, there is nothing subtle about Walt's bigotry, yet his misanthropy knows no bounds, and Eastwood does a remarkable job of finding the humor in Walt's equal opportunity racism. More than simply a racial morality tale, however, GRAN TORINO is about the unlikely bonds that people form to navigate the subtle complexities every day life. Like MILLION DOLLAR BABY, GRAN TORINO explores the challenging yet rich new world that can open up when individuals let down their guard, even if for just a moment. Estranged from his family and his church, and without any sense of personal peace, Walt offers all that he has to Thao and his family, namely wisdom and protection. When tragedy strikes the family, Eastwood allows a little classic Harry Callahan to poke through, but the surprising finale posits a hero that Dirty Harry would never have the guts to be. It's a potent symbolic gesture to Eastwood's own growth as a storyteller.
