Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.

Nobody who likes music could fail to be emotionally moved by this album, and not just because Marley is no longer with us. It was a special live treat before he died. The great thing about this record is the feeling that this is what it was like every night, unlike other live recordings which capture one or two gigs of a tour.
