Dancehall Mania album
$9.29 The original version of HEART OF THE CONGOS is available on VP (1287).
HEART OF THE CONGOS is a landmark reggae album whose initial obscurity was due to a dispute between producer Lee Perry and his label, Island Records. Perry's idea to create a roots vocal album took shape when Cedric Myton and Roy Johnson auditioned at his Black Ark Studio. The resulting album had Myton and Johnson wrapping their falsetto and tenor around one another in the sweetly rendered "Children Crying" and "La La Bam-Bam."
Perry's production lent HEART OF THE CONGOS a hazy, dub-like sheen that swathed the Rastafarian imagery of songs such as "Sodom & Gomorrow" and "Ark Of Covenant" in muted shadings. Backed by a number of legendary session musicians including Sly Dunbar and Ernest Ranglin, HEART OF THE CONGOS could have been a smash, had Perry not held back the record from Island Records who handled his international distribution. Instead, it became a lost classic cherished by countless reggae aficionados. This special two-disc package is an expanded version ...
| | Damian Marley Mr. Marley CD (1996)
Dancehall Mania CD music
$9.99 MR. MARLEY was Damian Marley's first release as a solo artist, reissued worldwide after the cross-genre success of his breakthrough album, WELCOME TO JAMROCK. Originally released in 1996 and featuring songwriting and production by older brother Stephen Marley, MR. MARLEY deals head-on with the issue of Damian's legendary father and his influence, both in featuring a baby photo of Damian with his dad on the front cover and by adapting some of Bob Marley's rhythms for his own songs. This is not a pure reggae release, however; rather, it's the first of Damian Marley's trademark blends of hip-hop attitude and reggae soul that would make him an international star nearly a decade later. Highlights include the slinky "Keep On Grooving" and the album's closing paternal tribute, "Mr. Marley."

| | Culture Harder Than The Rest CD (1978)
Dancehall Mania CD music
$9.29 The string of albums Culture recorded during the late '70s contained some of the most reliably solid sets from the tail end of reggae's roots era. These early releases for the production team of Joe Gibbs and Errol "E.T." Thompson yielded the group's finest work. Following an unfortunate engagement at Duke Reid's famous Treasure Isle studios (the results of which can be found on the unauthorized Africa Stand Alone), the vocal trio hooked up with Sonia Pottinger and engineer Errol Brown. The partnership, kick-started by Harder Than the Rest, proved highly fruitful, producing a series of albums that closely approached the quality of the earlier releases. This 1978 set finds lead singer Joseph Hill and harmony vocalists Albert Walker and Kenneth Dayes in a mellow mood. Though the melodies can suggest otherwise, by the sound of Hill's voice, the singer can't quite disguise the weight of his words. Songs detail the group's concern for the people of their community in general, and for Rastafarians specifically, driving home a series of lessons, warnings, and pleas. The one song that attempts to dodge these realities, "Love Shines Brighter," is unfortunately marred by over-sentimentality. The typically excellent assembly of session men respond to such material with an appropriately light touch: ...
