Purchase Harem CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Harem album
$14.49 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" -- a skippy, jaunty little song that brings to mind a mix of the Carpenters and Chicago. Throw in a rollicking and soulful duet with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings on "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)," and a fabulously old-school close-harmony version of "Stardust" with Bublé backed by the vocal ensemble Naturally 7, and CRAZY LOVE really starts to come together. Then Bublé goes and throws in a last minute overture by duetting with fellow Canadian singer/songwriter Ron Sexsmith on Sexsmith's ballad "Whatever It Takes." A devastating, afterglow-ready paean for romance, the song is a modern-day classic that pairs one of the most underrated and ignored songwriters of his generation next to one of the most ballyhooed in Bublé--a classy move for sure. The result, like the rest of CRAZY LOVE, is pure magic.

| | An An Evening With Il Divo: Live In Barcelona CDs (2009) With DVD
Harem CD music
$15.17 A live performance available as either a BluRay or a DVD/CD set, Live in Barcelona captures Il Divo's April 3, 2009, performance at Palau Sant Jordi. The video portions contain the complete 24-track performance; the CD is a truncated ten-cut sampler, designed as a bonus rather than the main attraction. That main attraction is the extravaganza captured on video, where the operatic quartet runs through all manners of pop standards -- "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Unbreak My Heart," "Nights in White Satin," "The Winner Takes It All," "My Way," "The Impossible Dream" -- sometimes translating the lyrics out of English so they feel more like opera. Naturally, this live set won't convince doubters, but those who have loved any of the group's five studio albums will find this a satisfying spectacle.

| | Very Best Of Julie London CDs (2006)
Harem album
$19.35 This two-disc set, generous at 50 tracks, is probably the most comprehensive Julie London anthology available. While certainly no match for her more technically accomplished contemporaries, London was a fine, appealing singer who used her cool, understated alto to excellent advantage.
London is best known for her signature song "Cry Me a River," and that's here, of course, but her sultry take on standards like "When I Fall in Love," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," and "Body and Soul" are nothing to scoff at. While some of her later recordings can suffer from excessive orchestration, London's vocal stylings are always on point, as the wealth of material on this EMI collection proves.
Digitally remastered double CD anthology of 50 great recordings by one of the most understated, underrated song stylists of the 20th Century. Thanks to the inclusion of "Fly Me To The Moon" and other gems you'll find on this set in television commercials, a new audience generation can hear the voice that inspires artists like Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves and many others. Also featured here are instantly recognizable songs like "Blue Moon", "When I Fall in Love", "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend", "Light My Fire".

| | Helen Reddy's Greatest Hits CD (1975) Import
Harem CD music
$9.79 In 1987, Capitol re-released this ten-song disc on CD with five additional tracks, including Helen Reddy's last three hit singles; this vinyl set contains the ten biggest tunes that built the singer's legend. Just as George Martin remixed the songs by the group America that he did not originally produce for their "best of," some of these productions feel like different mixes rather than the sound radio listeners were familiar with. It's the same voice, and the same musicians; however, "I Am Woman" has more pronounced horns, bigger drums, and Reddy's voice is clearer than on the original album. It certainly sounds like a superior mix, not what radio listeners were used to, unless the mastering job on this Greatest Hits release contains more defined mastering than the 45 rpm. There's a special thanks to producer Joe Wissert, so it is very likely he expanded the sound of the Jay Senter recording from her second album; Larry Marks' work from her debut, I Don't Know How to Love Him; and possibly some of the Tom Catalano productions as well. Hearing these ten powerful hits together is a strong argument against Reddy's detractors -- she climbed the charts with about as many songs as her friend Petula Clark, and both were embraced by adult contemporary radio. Leon Russell's "Bluebird" is absent, but the sublime Harriet Schock composition "Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" is here, the last of her singles from this era to go Top Ten, and second to last adult contemporary number one. It's a brilliant tune, and striking performance. Francesco Scavullo did the photography, as he did for so many stars, from Janis Joplin to Barbara Streisand and Diana Ross. "You and Me Against the World" is moving and soulful, taking a Paul Williams composition and showing some of the heart Reddy would bring to her Center Stage disc many years later. The original vinyl ten-song version of Helen Reddy's Greatest Hits is a concise package culled from six of her first seven albums. ~ Joe Viglione
