| | Everette Harp First Love CD (2009)
Centennial Collection
$14.84 Audio Mixer: Erik Zobler. Liner Note Author: Everette Harp. On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on breaks by Terri Lyne Carrington, a beautiful bluesy, hard bop trumpet solo by Michael "Patches" Stewart, and Lenny Castro's hand percussion. Directing the band is Duke on Fender Rhodes with help from the exquisite if understated electric guitar work from Dwight Sills. The ballad "Before You Leave" follows suit with Carrington providing elegant brushwork. These are pretty basic straight-ahead numbers. This is not to suggest that there ...

| | Half-Handed Cloud Learning About Your Scale CD (2001)
Centennial Collection
$12.49 Half-Handed Cloud: John Ringhofer (vocals, various instruments); Mindy Myers (cello); Bob Becker (flute); Chad Carlson (French horn); Jim Tate (double bass); Brandon Buckner, Eric Buckner (drums); Wendy Campbell (background vocals); Eric Smith, Trent Epperson. Personnel: Eric Smith (tuba); Eric B., Brandon Block, Laura Demme (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Brandon Block. Recording information: Corner Room (06/1999-11/1999); David's House (06/1999-11/1999); John's HOuse (06/1999-11/1999); Mckay (06/1999-11/1999). Including 25 songs in 24 minutes used to be the hallmark of intentionally primitive punk albums but, with Learning About Your Scale, Knoxville's Half-Handed Cloud (essentially John Ringhofer with help from various friends) uses the allotted time wisely to craft fully formed, even elaborate pop. Scale would sound like a single continuous piece if Ringhofer had more of an attention span, but he tires quickly of sounds -- a little moog here, a little tuba there, or maybe French horn and rubber band. He does, however, create miniature song cycles within the larger context of the album, complete with phoned-in supporting character dialogue. These mini-plays, which include "Those People We Made? We Love 'Em!" and "Sooty Insides Need Your Cleanliness," together with the broad instrumental palette, make Scale appear bristling with ideas and enthusiasm -- almost Baroque despite its brevity. Shifting gears ...

$43.35 Brian Auger's Oblivion Express: Brian Auger (organ, electric piano, piano); Alex Ligertwood (vocals, tambourine); Jim Mullen (guitar); Barry Dean (bass guitar); Robbie McIntosh (drums, percussion). Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England in 1972. All songs written or co-written by Brian Auger and/or Alex Ligertwood. 1972 saw the first personnel change in the Oblivion Express when Scot guitarist and vocalist Alex Ligertwood joined the quartet. Second Wind was the band's third outing overall, and the first with its new singer. In typical fashion, Brian Auger upped the creative ante once again. Whereas the previous two albums -- the self-titled debut, and A Better Land -- had showcased, respectively, the mirroring jazz and pop sides of the band, Second Wind combines them regally. With Auger being free to arrange and play, his composing skills went through the roof. In addition, Ligertwood added to the compositional depth of the band, as evidenced by his fine work, "Truth," which opens the album with its riff-oriented jazz undercoat and rockist sheen. Ligertwood is an excellent rock vocalist, with his reedy middle-range voice and strained falsetto, he wrings the passion from ...
