Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD  (2009)

Blue Train album
CD $13.09  3.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery. Audio Remasterer: Doug Sax. Arranger: Claus Ogerman. Personnel: Joel Pargman, Eun Mee Ahn, David Ewart, Amy Wickman, Gil Romero, Katia Popov, Tammy Hatwan, Razdan Kutumjain, Alan Grunfeld, Helen Nightengale, Barbara Porter, Mari Tsumura, Sid Page, Bruce Dukov, Peter Kent, Yue Deng, Tiffiany Yi Hu, Darius Campo, Liane Mautner, Josephina Vergara, Caroline Campbell, Charlie Bisharat, Mario Diaz de Leon, Tereza Stanislav (violin); Matt Funes, Marlo Fisher, Dan Neufeld, Vickie Miskolczy, Kate Reddish, Todd Marda, Janet Lakatos, David F. Herbie Hancock River: The Joni Letters CD  (2007)

Blue Train CD music
CD $10.99  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. RIVER features many of Mitchell's finest songs, stunning in their own right and reinterpreted beautifully by Hancock, plus a stellar assortment of musicians and guest vocalists. Mitchell's pop and folk tendencies have been assimilated into the arrangements; the album plays like a vocal jazz outing. Hancock is joined by fellow Miles Davis alums Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland, among others, and the guest vocalists include Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Leonard Cohen, and--on one track--Mitchell herself. Sophisticated, soulful, and gorgeous, RIVER is a must for fans of Mitchell, classic jazz, adult contemporary artists like Norah Jones--and, well, just about everyone. Personnel: Wayne Shorter (soprano); Dave Holland (bass guitar); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). Additional personnel: Corinne Bailey Rae, Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Leonard Cohen, Luciana Souza.

Blue Train music CDs
CD $15.79  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The 2008 reunion of Return to Forever's classic mid-1970s line-up marked an extraordinary event for fans of progressive jazz fusion. The band built their reputation on the mind-boggling chemistry of pianist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Lenny White, and guitarist Al Dimeola. That chemistry proves as explosive as ever 20 years after the group first dazzled audiences with their complex, rock-influenced hybrids. The two-disc set RETURNS features live recordings from Return to Forever's reunion tour, boasting such classics as "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" and "The Romantic Warrior." There is, as one might guess, no shortage of stretching out from each of these four jazz luminaries. Return to Forever: Al di Meola (guitars, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Chick Corea (piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Stanley Clarke (acoustic bass, upright bass, electric bass, bass guitar); Lenny White (drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: Buck Snow; Bernie Kirsh.

Herb Alpert Whipped Cream & Other Delights CD  (1965) Bonus Tracks

Blue Train album
CD $9.89  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike. WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative cover art. The tunes are mostly unknown originals or, in the case of Lieber & Stoller's "Love Potion #9," so transformed by the Tijuana "treatment" as to be almost unrecognizable. Special mention must go to guitarist John Pisano and marimba man Julius Wechter, both of whom round out the sharp corners of a potentially raucous sound. Building upon South of the Border's (1964) Top Ten success, Herb Alpert dismissed the contingency of Los Angeles-based studio instrumental all-stars, which he had christened the Tijuana Brass. Because there was enough demand for live dates, just like a musical Gepetto, Alpert formed a real Tijuana Brass. The bandleader/trumpeter was joined by Tonni Kalash (trumpet), Robert Edmondson (trombone), Pat Senatore (bass), John Pisano (guitars), Lou Pagani (piano), and Nick Ceroli (drums). Ostensibly, the personnel wasn't a primary consideration as Alpert and company had already begun making serious inroads on the pop music scene. Not bad, considering the market was being heavily infiltrated, if not practically dominated by the British Invasion. With Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965), they would take that momentum to new heights -- including three Grammy Awards alone

Miles Davis Tribute To Jack Johnson CD  (1970) Remastered

Blue Train CD music
CD $7.59  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks. The infectious boogaloo groove of "Right Off" has John McLaughlin's crunching, wah-wah-driven power chords dancing fervently around the relentless backbeat of Fender bassist Michael Henderson and drummer Billy Cobham. Gone are the trappings of bebop harmonies and modern jazz rhythms, save for Davis's dramatic solo, with its long, linear melodies and nasty blues inflections. The haunting, surreal "Yesternow" is an abstract update of the classic Miles/Gil Evans mood piece. The groove accrues momentum in a dreamy, backwards manner, keying off Henderson's hypnotic modal patterns and McLaughlin's speech-like figures, culminating in an atonal distortion solo by free jazz pioneer Sonny Sharrock. In all, JACK JOHNSON packs a punch like nothing else in the trumpeter's canon, and continues to grow in stature and influence decades after its release. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Brock Peters (spoken vocals); John McLaughlin , Sonny Sharrock (electric guitar); Steve Grossman (soprano saxophone); Herbie Hancock (organ); Michael Henderson (bass guitar); Billy Cobham (drums). Liner Note Authors: Dave Miles; Bill Milkowski.

The Dusseldorf-based techno outfit's debut full-length is low-key and relaxing, with updated 1970s and `80s keyboard sounds predominating. "The Sounds of Insects, Birds and Animals" is insistent and pulsating, propelled by diffracted vintage beat-box rhythms, while "The Longest Moment (Still Lasting)" is a comforting loop of chiming electric piano that sounds like the aural equivalent of an Alexander Calder mobile.

The Artistry Of Freddie Hubbard Vinyl LP  (1962)

Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). This 1962 effort was Freddie Hubbard's first recording under his own name for Impulse (MCA). Fellow Jazz Messenger Curtis Fuller and newcomer John Gilmore color the proceedings with adds trombone and tenor saxophone, respectively. These rock-solid, post-bop horn players are backed by the formidable rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Hubbard's shimmering style and clear tone show a clear debt to the late Clifford Brown and a nod to the bold sonic curiosity of John Coltrane. These are some hot young players pushing a classic format forward. The opening track is Duke Ellington's intoxicating "Caravan." The horns play the theme loosely above the dark undercurrent of Davis's and Hayes' playing. The piece explodes into a Hubbard solo that shows why he was the most talked-about young trumpeter of that era. The exceptional quality of his tone and range are amply displayed in his Latin-tinged version of the tender Gershwin standard "Summertime." On the closing track, "The 7th Day," Hubbard and his sextet ride a sultry cool jazz groove for all it's worth and build patiently to some bold exchanges, bowing out with a slow fade. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on July 2, 1962. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Personnel: Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Art Davis (bass); Louis Hayes (drums). Producer: Bob Thiele.
