Good sound reproduction, mixed bag of covers
Although not quite at the level of Steve Hoffman's work on the gold CDs from his now-defunct DCC label or the current MoFI golds, the sound reproduction is nonetheless very good and certainly an improvement over the original CD release of "It's Like This." The tone and presence of the acoustic bass and the instrument separation overall benefit the most from this SACD remaster. (I haven't listened to it on the Redbook layer so I can't say whether the improvement is derived more from the remastering than the increased bits allowed by the two-channel SACD). Some songs are, from the first listen, delightful, such as "Show Biz Kids," "For No One" and "Low Spark . . . " On others, her vocal stylings (which I loved -- and still do -- on her first five albums or so) sound inappropriate and the high register of Jones' register voice seem harsh. So, the remastering would be more for audiophiles and the album itself would appeal most to established longtime fans of Rickie Lee.
