where's the rest??
First Rays of the New Rising Sun songs The public would have been better served if the 3 albums, (Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge-original movie soundtrack, War Heros), had been transcripted to 3 CD's faithfully reproducing the albums.

Hendrix was truly unique.
First Rays of the New Rising Sun album for sale Hendrix was his own genre. He took blues and "fusion" and extended it to a new place. His influence is still there for current guitarists.

Jimi's Final Album... at last.
First Rays of the New Rising Sun buy CD music This is an excellent addition to the Hendrix catalog because it continues Jimii's tradition of studio albums with very few weak tracks.

Still smokin' after all these years
This is originally an extended version of his last album before he died, "Cry of Love" there will never be another like him and this recording affirms it from start to finish.

Are You Experienced Vinyl LP (1967) 4.3 stars
Vinyl Record $17.55 Buy It  Details
First Rays of the New Rising Sun album for sale This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family. The 1997 reissue also adds a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos, the original LP liner notes and song lyrics. Recorded in late 1966 and early 1967 at Olympic Studios, London, England. Jimi Hendrix's debut recording was an instant classic, and is as startling today as when it first hit the streets in 1967. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is probably the most rock-oriented of Hendrix's official studio releases, but its influences are incredibly diverse. "Third Stone from the Sun" recalls the supple octaves of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery; the churning Afro-Cuban polyrhythms of "Manic Depression" evoke John Coltrane and Elvin Jones; "I Don't Live Today" employs ritualistic Native American drumbeats; and the title tune borrows the Eastern airs of sitarist Ravi Shankar. The mix, beautifully refreshed on this 1997 reissue, is dark and churning, a dense wall of sound. Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding blast away with a barely controlled fury, and there's a distorted metallic edge to Hendrix's guitar timbre that has made ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? a particular favorite among rock and heavy metal guitarists. "Purple Haze" and "Foxey Lady" helped define the power trio format, thanks to Hendrix's full-bodied rhythm guitar and his soaring solos. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? also established Hendrix as a singer/songwriter. His Dylanesque vocals and spacy imagery make each tune a little gem, especially on gentle outings such as the ballad "The Wind Cries Mary." Originally released on Reprise. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh. The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, electric guitar); Noel Redding (bass, background vocals); Mitch Mitchell (drums, background vocals).

First Rays of the New Rising Sun CD music After 40 years, a number of ill-conceived posthumous albums, and countless bootlegs, one would almost have to be skeptical of a new album billed as "12 previously unreleased studio recordings -- almost 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix!" The good news is that Valleys of Neptune largely delivers on that promise. Even hardcore collectors will likely be surprised at how much of this album they haven't heard. But much of this material has been available before in some form, official and otherwise. Although there were tons of posthumous overdubs, elements of these very versions of "Stone Free" and "Hear My Train Comin'" were used as building blocks for the versions on Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning, respectively. Additionally, this version of "Stone Free" was included on 2000's The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, the only difference being that Noel Redding's bass and vocals were replaced with Billy Cox's bass from a slightly later studio session. An excerpt of the tune "Valleys of Neptune" was released as part of the Lifelines radio program box set, but that track ("Mr. Bad Luck" [aka "Look Over Yonder"]) and "Lullaby for the Summer" (basically an instrumental version of "Ezy Rider") were all well-known to collectors. However, Eddie Kramer's fresh mixes make them all sound better than ever. "Fire," "Red House," and "Sunshine of Your Love" are obviously well-known tunes, but these versions will most likely be new even to collectors. "Ships Passing Through the Night" (later transformed into "Night Bird Flying") and "Crying Blue Rain" are easily the rarest tracks here, and may well be surfacing for the very first time. The songs all sound mostly to completely finished; they definitely aren't just rough demos that got added to after the fact (although Mitch and Noel did do additional recording in 1987 for three of these tunes). Most of the tracks have multiple guitar parts, although Jimi probably would have replaced some of these guitar parts. It's not that they're at all bad, but some aren't perfect, and Jimi Hendrix was a perfectionist. "Crying Blue Rain" feels like just a studio jam (albeit a good one), and "Sunshine of Your Love" goes on just a bit too long with an unnecessary bass solo, but the rest sounds surprisingly finished and complete (and being studio recordings, the sound quality is excellent throughout). While it doesn't rise to the level of his other studio albums, Valleys of Neptune is a welcome catalog addition from a tremendous talent who died too young. ~ Sean Westergaard (2-LP set) 12 previously unreleased studio recordings - over 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix! 10 recordings were made between February and May 1969 as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create their sequel to the groundbreaking 1968 double album E

First Rays of the New Rising Sun buy CD music The sensational sophomore release of The Jimi Hendrix Experience highlights Hendrix's own evolving musical experimentalism and acknowledges his early musical influences of soul and R&B. Remastered from the original two-track mixdown master tapes, Axis: B Originally released on Reprise. Includes liner notes by Jym Fahey. Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England. This 1997 reissue of AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE is a newly remastered version that restores the original album artwork. It includes a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos and song lyrics. It is among the first batch of albums on Experience Hendrix, a new label controlled by Hendrix's family. The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, electic guitar); Noel Redding (vocals, bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums, background vocals). AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE was the follow-up to ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, and represented a much more conscious use of the recording studio's possibilities. Where his live shows continued to showcase the raw rocking power of the Experience, the recording studio gave Hendrix the composer/arranger a broader palette. There are still plenty of powerful blues/rock-inflected songs, such as the menacing "If 6 Was 9," the rolling "Spanish Castle Magic" and the spatial title tune. But "Up from the Skies" is a jazzy trio romp, featuring Hendrix's bluesy, vocalized wah-wah pedal. And on the ballads "Little Wing" and "Castles Made of Sand," Hendrix shifts the focus from the band to the silvery chord/melody accompaniments he often employed to complement his vocals. They are an orchestral effect unto themselves.

Electric Ladyland Vinyl LP (1968) 3.5 stars

First Rays of the New Rising Sun songs Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968. On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)." Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("Crosstown Traffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange," and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane also made cameos, appearing on this classic album's spiritual center, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)." The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, bass); Noel Redding (vocals, bass); Mitch Mitchell (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Chris Wood (flute); Freddie Smith (tenor saxophone); Al Kooper (piano); Mike Finnigan, Steve Winwood (organ); Jack Casady (bass); Buddy Miles (drums); Larry Faucette (congas).
