Vol. 2 - Just About As Good As It Gets album for sale A nice compilation of the ultra-varied career of Manu Dibango. The disc jumps from era to era comfortably, but hits upon almost every phase Dibango passed through (with the surprising exception of the original "Soul Makossa"). The album starts out in his early years with a sax-saturated ska in "Ngolowake," moving to the solo marimba work, a smooth jazz-esque version of "Nature Boy," and an orchestral work from his early days. Also included are pieces from the makossa days, contemporary R&B, urban grooves and more. The album ends with a contemporary remix of "Soul Makossa" and "Big Blow," with Bill Laswell and Herbie Hancock taking the sideman roles. Vol. 2 - Just About As Good As It Gets buy CD music This compilation of early Roy Acuff recordings, from 1938 to the mid-'40s, is interesting because it focuses less on Acuff's singing than it does on his underappreciated virtues as a fiddle player. In fact, on this version of Acuff's signature song, "Wabash Cannonball," Acuff only plays the fiddle and blows the train whistle; the vocals are handled by another member of Acuff's Smoky Mountain Boys, the delightfully-named Dynamite Hatcher. Though Acuff does sing on several tracks, COLUMBIA HISTORIC EDITION places his earliest recordings in their proper historical context, a feat that a surprisingly small number of country music compilations seem to manage. The remastered sound is miles ahead of any earlier reissue of this music, and the music itself is undeniable. Recorded between 1936 & 1951. Includes liner notes by John Rumble. Although the band spent more time in the studio than on their first two efforts, they stuck to their goal of capturing the feeling of a live-off-the-floor sound. Recorded in Mike Regimbal's home studio, the new album features eleven originals and two covers: Tom Waits' "Tango 'til They're Sore" and Johnny Cash's "Let the Train Blow the Whistle". CelebHeads, the cult following the band has established over the years, and new listeners alike will be right at home with the new songs, primarily from the quirky yet poignant pen of Rob Egan. "The Road to Hollywood" opens the Cd with a story from the boulevard of broken dreams, "Rodeo Clown" tells the tale of a woman pursuing a non-traditional career, the meanstreets of "Downtown" is spiced up with jaw harp and banjitar, "Old Lips" offers a view from the end of the line and "What Will It Mean When You're Gone?", from the pen of Mike Raymer, is a lovely ballad that tugs at the heart-strings. Contributing vocals to several songs are members of the Balkan Babes, an award-winning women's choral group. To understand how that fits together with the Children's roots-country-rockin'-twang you just have to trust the band's demented artistic vision 'cause it works. Delivering more than a half ton of fun, Children of Celebrities burst onto the Victoria music scene in 2004 when a group of pseudo middle-aged guys wanting more than their day jobs. All talented musicians, they also discovered a shared sense of humour about life and music. In 2005, the "Children" released their debut CD, Middle Age Wasteland. Victoria's Monday MagazineReader's Poll voted Children of Celebrities as "Favourite Group" and Middle Age Wasteland as "Favourite Local CD" in 2006. It was also nominated for a Vancouver Island Music Award.
