| Not the best WWI air-fighting film As a film about a legendary historical character, The Red Baron suffers from an inane script and an almost complete disregard for historical accuracy. The filmmakers appear to believe that the true story about the Red Baron is not sufficiently exciting, and so they choose to add in not only antiwar messages, but also a completely fictitious love affair between Richthofen and a nurse who pops up later at unlikely moments to disrupt the narrative. Even more laughably ridiculous is a subplot in which Captain Arthur Roy Brown (believed by the British to be the victor in the Red Baron’s last fight) becomes Richthofen’s friend and even has a secret meeting with him to talk about the war, the philosophies of air-fighting, and even his love interest! The script itself is poorly written, and the individual scenes often appear like isolated moments with hardly any continuity between them. Also, those who see this film for the air-fighting might be a little disappointed. Some twenty full-scale replicas of the planes of that period are used and they look fine on the ground, but none could fly. Thus unlike several earlier films, the air-fighting scenes are entirely CGI – moreover, not very good CGI. Some of the aerial combat scenes – especially those with many planes in action – look very unreal. As for the extras, there are only two page of text on the real Red Baron, but the clip on the production of the film is fairly interesting. Great Waldo Pepper DVD (1975) Top Seller
Red Baron movie Following the enormous success of THE STING, George Roy Hill finally had the freedom to make this film about the romance of aviation, which had been a cherished project of his for years. It stars Robert Redford as Waldo Pepper, a former WWI pilot who, in 1926, is barnstorming across the country in a Curtiss JN-4 biplane, doing stunts for a living. He exaggerates his wartime heroics, as much to fulfill his own fantasies as to drum up business, claiming to have engaged in a dogfight with ace German fighter pilot Ernst Kessler (Bo Brundin). His closest friend, Ezra Stiles, is working on the design of a monoplane that can perform the perilous outside loop, which Pepper intends to be the first to execute. With public interest in stunt flying on the downslide, the pilot is forced to partner with good-natured former competitor Axel Olsson (Bo Svenson). But things still remain tough for the pilots, leading them to join a flying circus. When tragedy strikes, Pepper must answer to aviation authorities. The film, well executed on every level, features extraordinary stunt flying, mixing slapstick with a darker drama about the crippling effect of adolescent fantasy.
A former World War I pilot barnstorms with his partner and dogfights a German ace in Hollywood. Stars Robert Redford, Bo Svenson, Bo Brundin, Susan Sarandon.
