Handel: Eight Great Harpsichord Suites HWV 426-433 This five-CD set covers concerts by the great Pakistani qawwali singer in Paris in 1985 and 1988, before he'd been taken up by Peter Gabriel and become a fixture on the world music circuit. And it's instructive to hear the development of a remarkable talent. The first two CDs document a single show in 1985, when Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his "party" (as the qawwali group is known) offer two-and-a-half hours of music, ranging from the devotional Sufi Muslim material for which he was best known to the lighter love poems, or ghazals. While still the lead vocalist, Khan is very much a member of the group, weaving vocal phrases with the backing singers, and only breaking out for short, dizzying flights of improvisation, running up to the heights like Charlie Parker before returning. The 1988 model is altogether a different beast, as the last three discs show. Khan's voice has deepened, and he sounds far more confident. While his party is still very much in evidence, it is Khan's show, and he's front and center throughout. Even his style has changed, and become more meditative. He takes phrases and spends a long time examining them with his voice, before using them as a springboard for further extemporization, often taking 20 or even 30 minutes to work his way through a song. This more thoughtful style -- not dissimilar to John Coltrane on A Love Supreme -- is perfectly in tune with the music, and it's truly the sound of someone entranced with melody. To listen to this set isn't just to hear someone stepping into his maturity -- it's to witness the arrival of someone who was called one of the world's great singers.
