For completeness only
The music on this CD is difficult to follow but if you try hard you can understand what the composer intended. If all you enjoy is instant melody then this CD is not for you. You will be required to work at this one, so it is really only for those who must have everything that Stan recorded. Everything is here, quality of recording and superb musicianship but the tunes will give you a surprise.

Turgid and uninspiring
I am amazed at the number of reviewers who feel this is essential music. It isn't. Kenton was off-base when he recorded this, as the charts are uninspiring even if complex - and complexity alone isn't artistic. I'd rather listen to Contemporary Concepts or Kenton Showcase - Holman and Russo.

For the jazz/classical avant gardist
"The City of Glass" and "This Modern World" are unique in the American avant garde of the fifties. The recording is unique and a priceless archive - these works will never be performed like this again. Just a few years later and we might have had them in stereo. Other reviewers have described Graettinger's compositional style though I would add that it turns to serial techniques now and again. It is at times noisy, others, jazzy (with some brilliant playing as one would expect from this pedigree), sometimes quiet and subtle but always intense; always on the verge of contemporary classical music. Graettinger certainly had musical vision while with Kenton, as if the latter opened a flood gate of energy. There will come a time when these recordings are rightfully accorded their true importance in the American cultural heritage.

Graettinger's Music: A Compulsive Fascination
Graettinger's music escapes from all "rational"critics, whether from a classical point of view or from a jazz one. Unlike most of the classical composers who took their first inspiration from their predecessors, Graettinger in all likelihood had only a little knowledge of Alban Berg and such, whom he was sometimes(wrongly) compared to. He wrote his music from scratch in creating his own rules. In insisting that only jazz musicians could give it the rendition he wishes, Graettinger built a fascinating world that crosses all musical genres. For his high originality and unique personnality, Graettinger is to me a monument in 20th Century music. No one but Stan Kenton could give life to his music.
