This box set pays homage to classic Hollywood film noir with eight crime and suspense classics pulled from studio vaults. The package begins with CORNERED (1945), from genre master Edward Dmytryk (MIRAGE); it stars Dick Powell as a Canadian WWII pilot who encounters a host of complications upon attempting to track down and kill the collaborationist responsible for his wife's death. The second feature in the set, 1947's DESPERATE, comes from another noir stalwart, Anthony Mann; this one stars Steve Brodie as an innocently trucker unwittingly caught up in a fur robbery and forced to confess a crime he didn't commit. The film then includes one of the most familiar of all noir titles, THE PHENIX CITY STORY, with John McIntire as a good-natured attorney who gets pulled into an effort to reform a corrupt southern small town. The fourth film in the collection, 1950's DIAL 1119, was helmed by Gerald Mayer, nephew of mogul Louis B. Mayer; it stars Marshall Thompson as an emotionally distraught young man who decides to hold some bar patrons hostage. The fifth feature in the collection, ARMORED CAR ROBBERY , concerns a diabolical attempt by career criminal Dave Purvis (William Talman) to mastermind the titular theft, despite his relentless pursuit by a determined cop. Don Siegel (DIRTY HARRY) helmed the sixth title in the set, 1956's CRIME IN THE STREETS, with John Cassavetes as an angry, dysfunctional teenager who conspires to commit homicide. The legendary Susan Hayward headlines DEADLINE AT DAWN (1946), about an aspiring actress attempting to clear the name of a sailor accused of murder. Finally, 1950's BACKFIRE stars Gordon MacRae as a released hospital patient searching for an old military buddy who has been framed on a murder charge. Bonus features in the set include theatrical trailers for two of the titles.
