Isley Brothers Collection CDs
The Collection includes 3 separate albums: THE HEAT IS ON (1975)/GO FOR YOUR GUNS (1978)/BETWEEN THE SHEETS (1983).
Sony repackaged and re-released three OK albums the Isley Brothers released in the late '70s and early '80s -- The Heat Is On, Go for Your Guns, and Between the Sheets -- as a slip-cased box set titled Collection. It's not a bad way to acquire the albums if you don't already own them, but there are no bonus tracks or new packaging or remastering, which means it's of marginal interest to hardcore collectors. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The Isley Brothers: Ronald Isley, O'Kelly Isley, Rudolph Isley (vocals); Ernie Isley (guitar); Chris Jasper (keyboards); Marvin Isley (bass).

Katy Gunn EP CD (2008)
Recipe for Katy Gunn: Pour equal parts of the following into large bowl:
Ella, Bettie Paige, Wonder Woman, Hip-Hop, pure joy, Brain-Dance, unrequited love, sinful debauchery, Idealism to a fault, and (quite a bit of) sarcasm.
Cook for any length of time to achieve varying results or moods. All results will be rich rich rich.
From the gritty underground of Brooklyn, NY, Katy Gunn - a DIY'er with a vengeance (she wrote, recorded, engineered and produced her solo EP), self-funded by - well, let's just say it was creative... delivers her own truth in a harmonic style reminiscent of the 1930s and modern enough to defy genre.
Having grown up on a ranch in the southern Arizona desert near the border with Mexico, the young Katy was entranced by the mysterious landscape, her parents' LPs of Shostakovich and Bach, songs sung by the migrant laborers, and by British pop on American radio. From the age of two, she routinely stole her brother's violin and practiced secretly in the broom closet.
Dropping out of high school to study classical violin at University, soloing abroad and also playing the role as concert master, she eventually abandoned the staid classical world to pursue her own style of writing and performing. She traveled restlessly between San Francisco, West Hollywood, Chicago, New York, Spain and Brazil before settling in Brooklyn.
Katy Gunn's first group project was Katy vs Evil. She wrote and co-produced the group's album Volume One with film composer and programmer David Majzlin, who has worked with artists Lou Reed and Fernando Saunders. Her self-released EP is a willing teaser for the upcoming album, which should be released in the fall of 2009, but let's not rush her, shall we?

Arctic Hospital Neon Veils CD (2008)
Under the Arctic Hospital guise, Wisconsin's Eric Bray works a vein of techno that's at once seemingly out of time and now timeless, a melange of approaches from the 1990s -- from classic Detroit techno descended from Derrick May via Plastikman to the early releases on Warp Records (especially Autechre before they went completely out of expected bounds) -- that recombines to elegant, powerful effect. At its most energetic and powerful, as on the driving, slick polyrhythms of "Stepping Back" and the stomping blast of "Neon Seven," the album runs off a huge live wire, working against both restrained minimalism and aggro Ed Banger-style frat-dance in distinct ways. Meanwhile, the big house-happy drum punch on "Encompass" helps Neon Veils feel like a wonderfully uptempo, vibrant summer record, while "Placement by Air" adds more space and very overt dub touches in the mix, slow pacing against the hyperdrive of the beat that adds enjoyable, unexpected depth to the arrangement. ~ Ned Raggett
