Five Stars For First Album
Canned Heat/Boogie With Canned Heat album for sale I've been a lover of blues music for 10 years. Delta blues especially. There's nothing like lying in bed hearing the rhythmic bass note and zinging slide guitar while you imagine yourself somewhere along the Mississippi Delta picking cotton. If I wasn't so disgusted by the racism and lack of education in Mississippi, I'd move there in a heartbeat. Of all the blues rock albums released in the 60s no album has ever come close to sounding like the real thing. The closest I've ever heard are "The Paul Butterfield Blues Band", "The Allman Brothers Band", "The Original Fleetwood Mac" and "Five Live Yardbirds" If there is any album out there that does justice to the sounds of Delta and Chicago blues it's "Canned Heat" These guys knew exactly what they were doing when they made this album. "Rollin' And Tumblin'" is just as glorious as it was when it was recorded by Muddy Waters in the late '40's. Bob Hite seems possessed by the spirits of those boogie boogie barrelhouse blues shouters whose names are now known only by the wind. Alan Wilson's harmonica playing has never been greater nor has his slide playing. Enough talk has been made about his talents on these instruments but no one has ever really commented on his rhythm playing. It's just as important as Henry Vestine's solos. Every note he played has a purpose. Listen to the counter melody he plays on Tommy Johnson's "Big Road Blues" Exact way that Johnson played. Beautiful ending there too. Speaking of Henry, "Catfish Blues" has one of his defining solos. My favorite part is his chord crash at the end of the solo. Like spice in sasparilla. The rhythm section of Larry Taylor and Frank Cook is just as great as all those Chicago rhythm sections. Frank left Canned Heat after the first album and was replaced by Fito de la Parra who leads them today. If you want my opinion, Frank was the better drummer. His fills on "Goin' Down Slow", the aforementioned "Big Road Blues" and "The Road Song" are stunning. Canned Heat gained a wider audience with their follow up "Boogie With Canned Heat" but to me nothing will match their first.

Older Music That Plays Very Well
Canned Heat never sounded better than their earliest efforts. They were not a white group imitating the Blues. They were a legitimate blues band, with distinctive and competent players who worked as a unit. All of these selections reflect intensity, musical knowledge, and an electric reinvention of the Blues that sounds great today. Dan Wargo.

Very authentic white boy blues
Canned Heat's original lineup with Al "Blind Owl" Wilson, Henry "Sunflower" Vestine & Bobby The Bear" Hite produced some of best and most authentic white American Blues bands of the 60's. It is comparable to Paul Butterfield's Blues Band's eponymous debut. Al Wilson was an extraordinary slide guitar player and a bona fide blues scholar who along with the great John Fahey, was responsible for "rediscovering" Clarence "Bukka" White and reigniting interest in "The Hook" i.e. John Lee Hooker. Bobby's strong & soulful delivery and the rest of the band's reverent embrace of blues make their 1st lp rank among the best of this genre. BOOGIE WITH contains more contemporary, psychedelic influences as they strayed away from straight ahead covers & concentrated on more original blues style electric boogie that would later define their sound. I only wish Al Wilson's final album before his untimely death could be available HALLELUJAH!

where's that "WINE SLUGGIN" FESTIVAL SPIRIT!
Good blues from the bands classic period. While I have tons of thier music, the 1st three Heat Lps were the best. On this disc you get the first two and while the next,"Living the Blues"is my personal fave, these are damn close to it. Once again Alan Wilson does a masterful job throughout,(check out the great harp on Help Me,On the Road Again and An Owl Song)with great slide and that distinctive bumblebee singing and Bob Hite"s singing was never better than he is on these two Lps. The bass(Larry "the mole" Taylor) and drumming (Frank Cook and Fito De La Parra respectively) are as good as any 60s blues band(better than most). Henry Vestine throws his psychedelic albiet repetative lead work into the mix and presto!, you have the childeren of John Lee Hooker and the fathers of ZZ Top and countless other wanna be blues bands all rolled into one. Absolutely worthwhile for the true blues fan(and those who remember Monterey and Woodstock). Peace.
