| A second listening to the album.. I maybe harshed making a review too soon to this new Mars Volta cd.After listening for second time and having the original vinyl on my hands..i thing is one of the best rock albums this year will give.I still think the idea was far bigger than the result..but maybe that's because the haunting of their masterpiece Frances the Mute is still in my mind.I have to remark that King Crimson's first album was the best and The Velvet Underground's first too--but their nexts where also great.Mars Volta has done it again. | Enter the Octahedron... Mars Volta has decided to slow down a bit in this new Octahedron cd--thing i don't disagree in any moments of the whole listening.John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is still doing the same type of work as their last Bedlam in Goliath..dubbing guitars--which makes their sound still richer. The star of the team this time is their lead singer Cedric-Bixler Zavala, which maybe get the rest of the members a little bit shy.Tough Omar Rodriguez-Lopez still try his best to be one of the best persons the world of music has given.Highlights and praises to the beginning of the album with th US single Since we've been wrong, the european single Cotopaxi, and their masterpice for this year..Teflon..and for the dessert--a never experimented type of song in their usual repertoire--Copernicus..a beuatiful soulfood psychedelic pop song..Copernicus.Octahedron will make happy to their true fans or maybe leave them a bit cold..maybe the idea was far bigger than the result. | AWESOME The more I listen to this record, the more I like it. In my opinion, this is their best album since De-loused. Track 4 - With Twilight As My Guide, is just plain beautiful. Cotopaxi definitely brings back memories of the last two releases, and anchors the album in the band's established mythos. All in all, I find it to be an incredible offering, far more calm than previous albums, but after the last two, I think that was needed. Don't get me wrong, both Amputechture, and Bedlam In Goliath were great albums, but after a while you need to relax a bit, and this album provided the perfect 'come down' from that high! | octahedron review I waited for Octahedron like it was Christmas morning. The Mars Volta are, in my opinion, the greatest thing to happen to music this decade. I'll give it 5 stars because the vocal melodies are as intricate and intense as ever. But its not their best by far. Usually they fill a 74 minute disc full of epic music. This time around, it seems like someone challenged them to write an album on their lunch break and this intimate 50 minute ballad fest was what they pulled out of nowhere. Its refreshing to hear that old dreamy psychadelic sound from the first 2 albums. For that alone, they haven't really sold out. They simply gave us a lower dosage this time. There aren't any LONG songs with ballsy changes and musical tricks. Still, The Mars Volta are taking risks as usual and its a clever concept since their last album was full of chaos. If your willing to switch gears from 'Goliath' to 'emotional frailty, then you'll like this album just fine. If you didn't quite get over the awesomeness of the last album, just play track 5 over and over. Its the closest they come to that hectic sound.
